Nearly two months had passed since my father’s death.

My mother’s emotional state had improved significantly.

I was planning to gradually express my thoughts about how Ethan and I weren’t suitable, waiting

for her to accept the idea before revealing the truth.

However, things took a turn for the absolute worst.

On a Saturday afternoon, I was at home reviewing an investment proposal.

My mother called me, her voice trembling with sobs.

“Claire, tell me the truth.”

“Did you and Ethan break up? Are you two not getting married anymore?”

I immediately put down my tablet and took a cab home.

Only after arriving did I learn what had happened.

My mother had gone out shopping that day and bumped into Ethan and Serena at a mall.

Not only that, she had seen Serena kiss Ethan on the cheek with her own eyes.

Furious and shaking, my mother had rushed forward to pull her away.

Caught completely off guard, Serena stumbled back several steps and hit her head hard against a

metal railing.

Ethan had already taken her to the hospital.

My mother clutched my hand, her voice shaking uncontrollably.

“Did Ethan do something terrible to you? Is that why you broke up?”

“If that’s true, I’ll go fight him myself.”

“How could he treat you like this? How could he bully you like this…”

My eyes grew sore, but I held back my tears to avoid making her feel worse.

I reached up to wipe her tears away.

“No, Mom.”

“We just ran out of feelings for each other. That’s all.”

“We broke up months ago. We didn’t tell you back then because of Dad’s passing, fearing it would

upset you.”

Don’t be sad. I’m living very well on my own now. The company is doing great, and I’m making plenty of money.”

My mother covered her mouth and wept.

I held her and comforted her for a long time.

That afternoon, once my mother fell asleep, I went to the hospital to check on Serena.

Ethan was sitting by her bed peeling an apple for her.

“I apologize on my mother’s behalf,” I said. “Today was a genuine misunderstanding.”

Serena glanced at me and tossed her medical chart in front of me. “Mild concussion.”

“I will cover all medical expenses and pay for any pain and suffering.”

She smiled coldly.

“I don’t accept that.”

“I want your mother to come here and apologize to my face.”

“She called me a homewrecker at the mall today and disgraced me publicly.”

“If she doesn’t apologize in person, I’m calling the police.”

She took the apple from Ethan and took a slow bite.

I looked at her for two seconds, pulled out another chair, and sat down directly across from her.

“Does your boyfriend know you spent Christmas with Ethan?”

! She froze.

I continued. “Does your boyfriend know you kissed Ethan today?”

“I didn’t kiss him! That was an air kiss, a cheek greeting! I was showing Ethan how people greet

each other!”

I nodded. “So, does your boyfriend know?”

The color drained from Serena’s face.

“A private apology from my mother might not be grand enough,” I said. “How about I post the

entire sequence of events, along with my mother’s apology, onto your university’s public student forum?”

than finally turned to look at me.

His eyes were dark, his voice lowered.

“Claire.”

It was a stern warning.

I ignored him and looked only at Serena.

“I will cover the medical costs and compensation in full. Can we settle it here?”

She bit her lower lip tightly and squeezed out a single “Fine.”

I nodded, stood up, and left the room.

A hand reached out past me and pressed the elevator button.

While waiting for the doors to open, Ethan stared at me continuously.

I turned to look him in the eye.

“If you want to demand justice for Serena, say what you need to say.”

A slight smile formed at the corner of his mouth.

Hands tucked into his coat pockets, he looked down at me with a condescending stance.

His tone wasn’t openly contemptuous, but rather sounded as though he were stating an established

fact.

“I just feel like you look very familiar right now.”

He leaned in close to me.

Our eyes met.

“In our previous life, you loved being aggressive just like this.”

“Claire, is this really meaningful?”

“You should start a new life too.”

“If you can never walk out from the shadow of our past life, then this second chance of yours will be

utterly pointless.”

The elevator doors opened with a chime.

Ethan straightened his spine and walked back toward Serena’s hospital room.

It was only on my way home that I fully registered his words.

He assumed I still loved him.

He was convinced I was using the incident as an excuse to target Serena out of jealousy.
