Seeing him, I instinctively stepped farther away from the car.

He was the former boss who had crossed boundaries with me before.

Lachlan had once confronted him over it, and the fight between them had ended at the Pack clinic.

“What’s wrong? Fight with your Alpha? Get in. I’ll drive you home.”

I shook my head. “No, thanks.”

“Why so cold? It’s nice and warm in here.”

“I’m fine, really.”

“Come on, get in.”

The more I refused, the closer the car crept toward me.

Unease crawled up my spine.

“I said no.”

His expression changed.

“Get in.”

His hand shot out through the window toward my wrist.

I jerked away.

Wolf instinct took over, my pulse hammering in my ears.

I shifted and bolted with everything I had.

I leaped over the highway guardrail and raced down the embankment.

But I didn’t expect him to follow.

Heavy footsteps sounded behind me as he came down after me.

Ducking into the tall grass, I clamped my hand over my mouth, not daring to make a sound.

Catching sight of the smartwatch on my wrist, it hit me—Lachlan had set up a speed-dial on this thing.

I frantically tapped it open and dialed without hesitation.

“Lachlan, help me! I’m at—”

“So you finally realize you were wrong?”

I flinched, freezing instantly.

I gritted my teeth. “I was wrong… Can you come pick me up? My former boss is here too…”

His thoughts instantly rang out in my mind:

[“Thank the Goddess! I knew this trick would work. My Luna is finally backing down.”]

[“She even made up a story about that creep… She didn’t look good when she got out earlier. Good thing I haven’t driven too far.”]

Yet the voice out loud remained cold and arrogant:

“Fine. Tamsin is in the car too. Apologize to her. Once she forgives you, I’ll turn around.”

“Lachlan… do you really have to push me like this?!”

“Are you going to apologize?”

My teeth ground together, shivering violently in the freezing wind. “Not to her… I can’t.”

“Then keep walking alone.”

His inner thoughts flooded back:

[“She still won’t give in?”]

[“No, I have to push harder. Our relationship is at a dead end—this is the only way to make her need me.”]

[“I just want her to rely on me… to feel deep down that she absolutely needs her Alpha.”]

[“I’m sorry, babe. I’ll only do this once in my life.”]

[“Please, I just want to hear you say you need me…”]

“Lach—”

I tried to speak, but the line went dead.

The next second, movement rustled behind me.

I spun around too late.

My former boss had found me.

“There you are.”

He reached for my arm.

I twisted away, lost my footing, and stumbled to the ground.

“Stay away from me!”

A sudden, blinding glare of headlights flooded the roadside.

“Stop! What do you think you’re doing?!”
