His Thoughts Loved Me, His Cruelty Destroyed Me Chapter 03

Lachlan’s shout echoed along the roadside.

I ignored him, picking up my pace and striding forward.

The car sped up instantly, pulling over right beside me.

“Rowan Vance! Stop right there!”

The thoughts in my mind were a chaotic mess:

[“She actually just walked off?!”]

[“Didn’t she just walk out of the clinic? Damn it, I don’t even know what’s wrong with her!”]

[“I just wanted to ask her what happened!”]

[“With this biting cold wind, how can her barely recovered wolf take it? Does she really not care about her own body?”]

[“Does she really hate her Alpha that much?”]

[“Turn around! Turn around, babe…”]

“Rowan!”

The SUV swerved abruptly, cutting off my path.

I saw his chest heaving violently, the corners of his eyes flushed with suppressed crimson red.

“Ro—”

[“Fine, maybe I should just surrender.”]

[“Seeing her like this makes my wolf ache.”]

[“What kind of look is that?”]

I stared at him, my gaze cold and unyielding.

His lips parted slightly, then he gritted his teeth:

“Since you want to act so tough, then…”

He pointed at the coat on my back.

“I bought that for you. Take it off and give it back before you walk off.”

I gasped.

A gust of piercing cold wind howled past, blowing right through my thin clothes.

I wrapped the coat tighter around myself. “Lachlan, we are on the interstate! It’s freezing out here!”

Lachlan rested an arm on the open car window. “You don’t have to give it back. Just apologize to Tamsin.”

I froze.

He glared at me.

[“Admit you were wrong! Say it! Stop torturing your Alpha with that look, babe!”]

The voice in his head sounded so desperate it was nearly breaking, yet the words squeezed from his mouth carried cold Alpha command:

“Three, two…”

I ripped the coat off and threw it through the window without a second thought.

Lachlan went rigid.

“Satisfied now? Get lost!”

My chest heaved. Without the coat to block the freezing wind, a sharp ache twisted through my lower abdomen.

Lachlan gripped the fabric of that coat, his knuckles turning white.

That coat was the very first gift he ever bought me.

His chest rose and fell, letting out a harsh sneer:

“Just this one?”

I froze.

His eyes swept over everything I had with me.

“The heels. The bag. Everything I bought you.”

I wrapped my arms around myself, jaw clenched tight against the bitter cold.

“Lachlan, don’t do this. I’ll pay you back in cash when I get back. Consider everything bought by me.”

“All the Vance family assets were given to Tamsin. Where are you going to get the money to pay me?”

A thunderbolt hit me. I froze dead in my tracks.

Once, back when my father and stepmother suffocated me to near breaking, he had held me tight and said:

“If the Vance family wrongs you, I’ll never let you suffer a single day!”

“I swear, I’ll make every she-wolf envy my Luna!”

My eyes stung. I gritted my teeth, locking eyes with him. “Do you really have to push me like this?!”

“You’re the one who keeps making Tamsin’s life miserable!”

A burning sting hit my eyes, tears threatening to spill. A suffocating dead silence fell between us.

In the end, his cold voice broke the silence:

“Three, two…”

I closed my eyes.

Then I kicked off the heels, pulled the bag from my shoulder, and threw everything through the open window.

“Is this enough?!”

Lachlan stiffened violently.

Time seemed to freeze completely.

His Adam’s apple bobbed. His crimson-tinged eyes locked onto mine, but for once, he had nothing to say.

“Anything else?”

I stared straight at him.

“Send me a bill.”

He didn’t utter another word.

The engine roared like a beast, and the SUV shot forward like an arrow from a bow.

I stood alone on the freezing roadside.

A gust of icy wind swept past, and a sharp ache twisted through my lower abdomen—a painful reminder of why I had just left the Pack clinic.

Worse still, my phone was still in his car.

I had no way to call anyone.

So I started walking along the roadside, wrapping my arms tightly around myself as cars rushed past.

A few drivers slowed, throwing confused glances my way.

“Rowan?”

A Volkswagen slowed down and pulled up beside me.

The window rolled down. My forty-five-year-old werewolf boss stared at me in shock:

“Did you… get dumped on the side of the road?”

Lachlan’s shout echoed along the roadside.

I ignored him, picking up my pace and striding forward.
