My Husband Tried to Give His Fortune to His Secret Son, But He Forgot Our Prenup Chapter 06

The room fell silent for a moment.

Skyler lowered his head, his face pale under the hospital lights as he desperately tried to remember.

Madeline was the first to react. She whipped around and glared at me, her voice sharp enough to cut through the room.

“Vivian, what the hell are you talking about? The company belongs to Skyler! Everyone knows he built the Carter Group from the ground up!”

“What kind of chairman makes thirty dollars over thirty years? If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable!”

She grew more agitated with every word, stepping toward me in her heels until her finger was almost in my face. “You’ve lost your mind! Skyler, she’s lying, right?”

Skyler didn’t answer.

Madeline froze for a moment, then turned toward him. “Skyler?”

He still kept his head down, his shoulders sagging as if something impossibly heavy had settled on them. His fingers clenched the bedsheet until his knuckles turned white.

Madeline’s expression slowly changed. “Skyler, say something!”

The attorney had already stopped typing.

He took one look at Skyler’s reaction, asked no questions, quietly closed his laptop, and walked to the

window to make a phone call.

“I need a complete search of every asset in Skyler Hayes’s name. Yes, all of them. Company equity, real

estate, bank accounts, transaction records. Don’t miss a thing.”

His voice was low, but the room was so silent that every word carried. “Yes. Now. Make it urgent.”

Skyler’s head snapped up. He stared at the attorney’s back, his lips trembling as if he wanted to speak but

couldn’t force out a sound.

Madeline was still shouting.

“Vivian, don’t think you can fool anyone with some fake contract! Skyler has poured his entire life into this company. You’ve been sick and staying at home enjoying an easy life, so what right do you have to-”

“Enough.” Skyler finally spoke, his voice hoarse, as if he’d had to force the words out.

Madeline stared at him in disbelief. “Skyler?”

He didn’t look at her, his eyes locked on me, filled with shock, anger, and something else he desperately tried

to hide.

Fear.

His mother suddenly lunged forward, trying to shove me. “You tramp, our family…”

I stepped back and easily avoided her, then raised my hand and gave a soft clap.

The hospital room door opened. A middle-aged man in a gray suit walked in carrying a black briefcase, followed by two young assistants.

He had a lean face, gold-rimmed glasses, and a calm, composed air.

The moment Skyler saw him, his pupils contracted. “Mr. Reed?”

“Mr. Hayes. It’s been a long time.” Mr. Reed gave him a slight nod.

“I was retained by Mr. Carter before his death and have served as chief legal counsel to the Carter family office for forty years. I’m here today to present a document.”

He walked to the bedside, opened his briefcase, and pulled out a neatly bound stack of papers.

Printed clearly across the cover were the words:

[PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT-NOTARIZED COPY]

“Section Two…” Mr. Reed said as he opened the agreement, his voice clear and steady, as though he were reading an ordinary legal document.

“During the marriage, Mr. Skyler Hayes was granted authority to manage and operate the Carter Group and its affiliated companies. He was granted no ownership rights, voting rights, or authority to transfer, sell, or otherwise dispose of any company or family assets.”

“Section Three, Mr. Skyler Hayes’s annual salary was fixed at one dollar. Over the thirty-year term, his total compensation amounted to thirty dollars.”

“Section Four, all personal property, real estate, securities, and financial products purchased with the Carter

Group funds during the marriage remained the property of Vivian Carter and the Carter family.”

“Section Five…” He paused and looked up at Skyler.

“If Mr. Skyler Hayes violated the agreement’s marital-fidelity clause, his management authority would

terminate automatically, and he would be required to repay in full all funds he had received from Carter Group during the marriage.”

Mr. Reed closed the agreement. “In other words, Mr. Hayes, the total value of the assets you personally own

is currently thirty dollars.”

The hospital room was so quiet that the steady beeping of the monitor sounded deafening.

Skyler stared at the agreement, his fingers beginning to tremble.

He flipped through the pages one by one, his face growing paler with every page until, and when he reached the final one, he suddenly looked up.

“This can’t be real. No! This can’t be possible! When I signed it, I clearly…”

“Clearly what?” I spoke up, my voice soft. “You thought once my father died, no one would ever enforce the agreement?”

His mouth opened, but no words came out.

His mother suddenly lunged forward, trying to snatch the agreement from Mr. Reed, but he stepped aside, and she nearly fell when she missed.

“It’s fake! You forged this!” She shrieked, “My son worked himself to the bone for the company for thirty years! How could he possibly have only thirty dollars?”

Mr. Reed calmly adjusted his glasses.

“There were three executed copies of this agreement. One was placed in secure legal custody before Mr. Carter’s death. One was retained by the Carter family office. The third was given to Mr. Hayes.”

“The copy belonging to Mr. Hayes was kept in a secure vault in the company all these years. If you doubt its authenticity, you’re welcome to retrieve it.”

Skyler stared at the signature and seal on the agreement, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed hard.

He recognized his own handwriting.

He turned toward me, his eyes red. “You and your father planned this from the beginning?”

“Planned?” I smiled. “Skyler, you were the one who signed the agreement.”

“Back then, you promised my father that you’d spend your life taking care of me and giving everything you had to the company.”

“When my

father asked you to sign an agreement so he could have peace of mind, you agreed without hesitation. You even said you’d agree to anything as long as it meant you could marry me.”

“Have you already forgotten everything you said back then?”

Skyler’s chest heaved violently, and the monitor began to sound a rapid alarm.

He ripped the IV from his hand, jumped out of bed, snatched the agreement, and prepared to tear it apart.

Mr. Reed watched him calmly.
