This Heiress Doesn’t Fight Anymore Chapter 09

Both of them went still at the word died.

They assumed I meant the yacht. The water.

Only I knew I was talking about the other death. The slow one. Alone at my desk, heart giving out after weeks

with barely any sleep.

I brushed the crumbs off my hands and turned toward the gate.

“Maren!”

Bennett lunged to his feet and came at me with open arms.

Bang.

I slammed the gate shut in his face.

His nose almost caught the edge.

It went on like that for days.

The patch of road outside my yard became a holding pen for two grown CEOS.

Graham booked out the only five–star hotel on the island and never spent a single night there.

Every day, he posted up outside my yard in the same rumpled suit like he was standing guard.

Whenever I left the house, he trailed behind me like a shadow.

“Maren, it’s windy. Do you want my jacket?”

“Maren, don’t eat the seafood here; it’s not fresh enough. I flew in king crab. Let me cook for you tonight.”

I looked through him like he was glass.

Bennett was worse.

On top of the daily crying jags outside my gate, he showed up one morning with a stack of paperwork thick enough to use as a doorstop.

“Sixty percent of Whitmore’s shares. Already transferred to your name.”

“Mom and Dad sent me. They know what they did. If you come home, the whole company’s yours. Every decision. No questions asked.”

I stared at the stack. Everything I’d killed myself trying to earn in my last life.

Handed to me now like it was nothing.

It meant nothing.
