Adrian thought he had coaxed me.

A month later, he wanted to see Vivian Shaw again.

On the morning before my birthday, Adrian looked at me apologetically.

“Nora, I need to go on a business trip. Just one day. I’ll be back tomorrow morning.”

“I won’t miss your birthday.”

“I really don’t want to go, baby.”

He kissed my forehead.

“What gift do you want?”

I tapped his chest with my fist.

“If I say it out loud, then you didn’t put any thought into it. Guess for yourself. If I don’t like it, I won’t want you anymore.”

He refused to accept it.

“When have I ever given you the wrong gift?”

His gifts had always suited me perfectly.

“If you get it wrong, I won’t want you anymore.”

I looked at him seriously.

The tall man’s body stiffened slightly.

“Then it’s settled. If I get it right, you can never say you don’t want me again.”

“Deal.”

He made the promise with me like a child.

When Adrian’s hand landed on the doorknob, for some reason, I felt an impulse.

“Adrian, can you… not go?”

He looked troubled.

“Nora…”

I closed my eyes.

“Go.”

For some reason, Adrian looked like he was about to lose something. He wanted to turn back, then paused.

His sudden panic made him think he must have been overthinking.
