Disappointed, I said, “As long as it wasn’t you.” 

“Elena, he’s dirt poor, he’s got that mute, crazy mom 

of his, and he still had the nerve to say in front of 

everyone that he wants to date you. He’d have to be 

delusional to think he could land someone like you. 

Don’t be stupid. If you end up with him, you’ll go from a rich man’s daughter to a worn–out broke housewife.” 

I brushed him off. “I know. I would never like him.” 

Sebastian smiled and patted my head. 

“That’s my girl.” 

Only then did I notice Adrian standing in the doorway 

of the hospital room. 

Sebastian had known he was there all along. Tilting his chin up smugly, he said, “You heard her. Elena will never like you. You’re not welcome here, so get out.” 

Adrian didn’t argue with him. He turned and left. 

I thought he wouldn’t come back. 

Late that night, I woke with the feeling that someone 

was watching me. 

Adrian was sitting beside my hospital bed. 

“Elena, do the scratches on your neck hurt?” 

“No.” 

I could feel him drowning in guilt. 

“I’m sorry. My mom didn’t mean to.” 

“My mom… she was in college once. The summer after her freshman year, she was trafficked to Iron Pine Ridge.” 

“The man who bought her was Earl Cline, a forty–two–year–old deadbeat. He raped her, and I was 

born from that.” 

“That place was poor beyond belief, and the people there were vicious. They worked women like livestock. I could handle a hard life, but I couldn’t stand watching him beat my mom and rape her.” 

“When I was ten, I took my mom and ran.” 

“I went to the police. Earl Cline was sentenced to eight years for rape and aggravated assault.” 

So this was the year Earl Cline would be getting out of prison. 

“Eight years later, my mom is still living in fear. She’s terrified they’ll drag her back there. She was diagnosed with a serious mental illness. If she gets triggered, she spirals.” 

I had already known all of this in my last life. 

Even so, hearing him say it out loud still hurt. 

Adrian let out a bitter laugh. 

“I’m the spawn of a rapist. I’ve got filthy blood in me. I never… never once let myself think about being with 

you. You’re so beautiful, you feel like some sweet 

dream I don’t dare touch.” 

I sat up. 

“Adrian, come closer.” 

He leaned in. 

I wrapped my arms around him and stroked his back, 

trying to soothe him. 

“Adrian, what I said to Sebastian was the opposite of 

what I meant. You’re wonderful. Don’t look down on 

yourself.” 

“Let’s apply to North Shore University together, 

okay?” 

I was offering him a future. 

Adrian pulled me into a tighter embrace, his body 

trembling slightly. 

“Okay…” 

The next day, I was told to go to Wilson’s watch repair 

shop. 

Sebastian was already there waiting for me. 

The watch had been taken apart, its pieces spread out 

in front of him. 

Holding up the bug, he asked, “Elena, what is this?” 

He had already found it, so there was no point hiding 

anything. 

“A bug. Don’t play dumb.” 

Sebastian exploded and lunged at me, wrapping a hand 

around my throat. 

“I’d already been wondering why every single time I 

went after him, you just happened to show up.” 

“I treasured the birthday gift you gave me. I wore it every day. And this is what you do? You stab me in the 

back for an outsider?” 

“Elena Vance, we’re twins. In this world, we’re 

supposed to be the ones closest to each other. How 

could you… do this to me!” 

I heard my neck give a sick little crack. He really was 

trying to kill me. 

“Stop… pretending… You’ve been lying to me this 

whole time… acting like a good person when you don’t have a shred of humanity!” 

Sebastian let go. Then a grin split his face like a circus 

clown’s. 

“So you figured it out, Elena.” 

“In a family like ours, turning out like me is what’s normal. Why do you get to come out of it untouched and still be the good one?”
