The Luna Who Heard Cruel Secrets Chapter 05

The Luna Who Heard Cruel Secrets Chapter 05 The White Wolf Arrived

Curled up in his arms, I pressed my ear against his chest and listened to the steady beat of his heart.

But inside my head, everything was a mess.

This was not how I thought things were supposed to go.

Shouldn’t he have taken the chance to get angry and throw me out of the manor?

Or was this worse?

Was he planning to keep me by his side and let the humiliation sink in slowly?

The next morning, Rhett practically hauled me out of bed.

He was already dressed.

A charcoal–gray suit wrapped neatly around that broad–shouldered, narrow–waisted build unique to wolves. His tie was perfect, every line crisp and controlled.

“Get up. You’re coming to the council hall with me today.”

Still half asleep, I rubbed my eyes. My mouth moved faster than my brain.

“I’m not going-”

Before I could finish, Rhett bent down until his lips were right by my ear.

“If you say no one more time, I’ll carry you to the car myself.”

I got up immediately and got ready in record time.

The drive there was silent except for the low growl of the engine.

That perfume was still in the car.

It clung to the air like poison, seeping into me a little at a time.

I stared at the bottle for so long that my nose started to sting.

Rhett seemed to notice where I was looking. His fingers tapped lazily against the steering wheel, long and elegant, all sharp knuckles and easy rhythm.

“Do you like the scent?”

I froze.

Was he serious?

Was this his idea of mercy–rubbing salt into the wound and asking what I thought of another woman’s gift?

I turned my face toward the window and made my voice as hard as stone.

“No. It reeks.”

From the corner of my eye, I thought I saw his mouth twitch.

The moment we pulled up outside the council hall, I reached for the door handle- and another scent poured in through the open window.

Strange. Powerful. Laced with roses and musk.

A silver sports car had stopped beside us, low to the ground like a predator ready to spring.

The driver’s window slid down.

A woman’s face appeared.

Deep brown hair in loose, glamorous waves. Red lips. Sunglasses pushed up over her forehead. She wore a black button–down shirt tailored close to the body, the collar slightly open. Nothing sparkled on her skin, but the ease in the way she held herself was brighter than jewelry ever could have been.

She took off her sunglasses and smiled in Rhett’s direction.

“Rhett. Fancy seeing you here.”

Rhett lowered his window and gave a slight nod.

“Morning.”

Just one word.

But he let her call him by name.

Until now, I had always believed I was the only one allowed that kind of closeness.

Her gaze drifted toward me.

“So this is the famous Luna?”

She smiled again, perfectly measured and perfectly polite.

“She’s adorable. No wonder you kept her hidden so well.”

Every hair on my body stood on end.

The servants‘ thoughts exploded inside my head all at once.

“She’s here, she’s here–this is the White Wolf. Daisy.”

“My God, that presence, that face… so this is what a White Wolf looks like?”

“She called the Alpha by name. They must be incredibly close.”

“The current Luna is just an Omega. How could she ever compare?”

So this was Daisy.

The mysterious, powerful White Wolf.

What was I next to her?

Just an Omega who knew how to cling and plead and make herself small around an Alpha.

My fingers fumbled uselessly at the seat belt.

I forgot to say goodbye. Forgot everything, really. I shoved the door open and hurried out of the car.

My foot nearly twisted the second it hit the pavement.

Behind me, I could hear Daisy laugh—a bright, easy sound, not cruel, almost warm.

“Oh no, did I scare her off? I’m not dangerous.”

Then Rhett answered, his voice low and threaded with helpless fondness.

“Don’t tease her. She’s too innocent for that.”

I ran into a side room off the council hall and slid down against the door.

My eyes burned, but I bit my lip hard and forced the tears back.

Anna. What exactly are you still hoping for?

She’s the one fate chose.

You were the accident.

For the rest of the day, I felt like a Rogue wandering too far from her own mind.

Distracted. Hollow. Half–lost.

I heard Daisy had spent the entire day in the council hall with Rhett and the elders, discussing major Pack business.

Her pressure was no weaker than his.

The two of them moved together like people who had fought side by side for effortless understanding and silent coordination.

And me- the Omega who had somehow become Luna-

I had turned into a joke.

years,

all

“Did you hear? The current Luna’s probably getting thrown out of the Pack soon.”

“Obviously. Compared to Lady Daisy, what is Anna, really? She’s just an Omega.”

“The Alpha only gave her this life out of pity. Now that his true mate is here, she should step aside.”

I stood just outside the tea room.

The door hadn’t shut all the way.

Their whispers leaked through the crack like needles, one after another.
