The Luna Who Heard Cruel Secrets Chapter 03

The Luna Who Heard Cruel Secrets Chapter 03 He Never Came For Me

The servants‘ mocking thoughts crashed through my head like an avalanche.

“This Luna is so pathetic. The Alpha isn’t coming.”

I didn’t believe them.

Or maybe I just wanted to gamble one last time.

I stood outside the theater, my fingers curling tighter and tighter into my palms.

At this hour, his car would usually already be waiting by the entrance. He would lean against the door and wait for me.

But today, there was nothing there.

I kept staring at the road.

And staring.

And staring.

“Luna? What a coincidence. Are you heading home?”

A voice came from behind me, carrying the fading rumble of a motorcycle engine.

I turned around.

It was Allen.

He had only recently become a Beta, and everything about him still carried that restless, eager energy. He tucked a helmet under one arm and grinned at me.

“Did Alpha not come pick you up? I can give you a ride. I’m heading to report to him anyway.”

I parted my lips, ready to refuse out of instinct.

But then I remembered that Rhett was probably having dinner with that White Wolf right now.

So I nodded.

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

Allen had just gotten me onto the back of the motorcycle and was about to start it-

when a horn split the air.

Long. Sharp. Furious.

It sounded like a wolf howling with its tail stepped on.

Before I could even turn around, a thick wave of Alpha pheromones rolled over me.

Rhett had no idea when he got out of the car, but in the next second, he was already in front of

me.
He reached over, lifted me straight off the motorcycle, and pulled me into his arms.

The sudden weightlessness made me gasp. Instinctively, I wrapped my arms around his neck.

His expression was ice–cold.

“Allen,” he said. “Why are you here?”

Allen froze for half a beat, then smiled.

“Alpha, good evening. I was just passing by and happened to see Luna standing outside. Since I was on my way to report to you anyway, I thought I’d bring her back.”

A glint of gold flashed in Rhett’s eyes.

It was the first sign of his wolf surfacing.

The tension in the air became so thick it was almost hard to breathe.

Still clinging to his neck, I loosened my grip a little and tried to smooth things over.

“Rhett, let’s just go home.”

Then I turned to Allen and forced my voice to sound normal.

“Thank you, Allen. You should head back too.”

Rhett said nothing.

He just turned and walked away with me in his arms.

The jostling made me uncomfortable, but I still refused to hold onto him any tighter.

Once we got into the car, I thought about explaining myself.

Then I smelled perfume.

And beneath it, another scent–strange, unfamiliar, secretive.

That had to be the White Wolf’s scent.

I saw the perfume bottle tucked into the side compartment.

Rhett never wore perfume.

He had always said it interfered with his sense of smell.

And

yet now there was perfume in his car.

“This has to be the White Wolf’s perfume.”

“Look at Luna’s face. She’s figured it out.”

“She should leave with some dignity before the Alpha throws her out of the territory.”

“And she doesn’t seriously think the Alpha was jealous just now, does she? Don’t be ridiculous. Anyone would hate seeing their property touched by someone else.”

I closed my eyes and took a slow breath, but the fragrance had already burrowed too deeply

into me.

So the servants had been telling the truth after all.

He really had seen the White Wolf today.

Maybe something had happened between them in this very car.

And before long, he would probably bring her back to the manor and cast me out.

I shifted my body toward the car door, putting more distance between us.

When we got home, Rhett made dinner himself.

Was that guilt?

I ate quickly, then cleaned up the dishes with the speed of a startled deer.

After that, while he was in his study dealing with Pack business, I moved the few things I had in his room–a few changes of clothes, a hairbrush, some makeup–into the guest room.

For once, I did not keep going back to the study door, pestering him to come rest early the way I used to.

After my shower, I climbed into the guest bed and buried my face in the blankets.

They didn’t hold his warmth.

Or his scent.

My feet brushed the cold sheets, and I flinched.

Every night before this, he had always held me and warmed me through. His body ran hotter than any ordinary wolf’s. He was like a living furnace.

I probably wouldn’t have that anymore.

I lay there staring at the ceiling.

A thin crack ran across it, like the bed of a dried–up river.

Then came a knock at the door.

Rhett’s voice came through the wood–low, rough, threaded with something I couldn’t quite

name.

“Anna. Open the door.”
