It wasn’t until two days later that Ethan found his way to Wynne City.

When I ran into him, I had just returned from buying groceries.

He looked a bit haggard, but when he saw me, his eyes lit up with delight. “Claire, I finally found you!”

I took a step back, my gaze falling on the number displayed above Ethan’s head.

I snorted derisively. Looked like he’s been getting along pretty well with Summer these past few days!

“Claire, there’s really nothing going on between Summer and me. She’s just my subordinate–I just wanted to help her out since she’s still so young!”

I looked at him. “Ethan, if I’m not mistaken, Molly’s wedding leave ended a couple of days ago, and she’s back at the office, right?”

“Summer is her assistant. She’s looking for an apartment–why didn’t she ask Molly? Why did she have to

come to you?”

Ethan was caught off guard by my question and looked away guiltily. “She… she probably just thinks a man makes her feel more secure!”

I laughed out loud. “Fine, then go ahead and keep making her feel secure!”

“Claire! Can you stop being so unreasonable? I’ve already rented Summer an apartment. I swear I won’t meddle in her affairs anymore! Come back with me–what kind of example are you setting by staying at Willa’s place all the time? Besides, Luna still has school to attend!” He looked at me as if I were a little girl throwing a tantrum.

I stared at Ethan. “Ethan, I left the divorce agreement on the coffee table–it’s already signed. All you have to do is sign it, and you’ll be free to sleep with whoever you want.”

I paused for a moment. “As for staying at Willa’s place, if she’s okay with it, it’s none of your business.”

Ethan’s face turned pale inch by inch, and the number above his head began to fluctuate once more- miraculously rising.

It rose to 63%.

“Just because I helped a subordinate find an apartment, you want to divorce me? Claire, when did you become so unreasonable?”

“You never acted like this when I helped Molly before! You’re just biased against Summer!”

“She’s just a recent college graduate. When she came to me with a problem like this, was I supposed to just

stand by and do nothing?”

I laughed. “With so many female colleagues at the company, she didn’t go to any of them–she went straight to you. I find that pretty amazing, too.”

Hearing the sarcasm in my voice, Ethan finally lost his patience.

“So what exactly do you want? Will you only be happy if I fire her?”

“Claire, it’s not easy for a young woman like her. She finally managed to find a job, and now she’s losing it just because of your prejudice…”

“Ethan, haven’t you noticed?” I interrupted him. “Ever since you came to see me, you’ve been speaking up for Summer the whole time. All you ever say is that she’s just a young girl, she’s a recent graduate, and she’s had it tough. You call me unreasonable and lacking in empathy, and you accuse me of being biased.”

I looked at him. “If I’m such a terrible person, then go ahead and sign it!”

With his true feelings laid bare, Ethan’s face turned even paler.

I paid no further attention to Ethan and walked straight into the gated community. Since Ethan didn’t have access to the gate, he could only watch my back gradually disappear around the corner.
