Bianca showed up too, not by choice.

Grant had dragged her all the way out here to apologize.

She looked like she’d rather be anywhere else.

“I’m sorry.”

Grant made her pay the medical bills.

“You don’t get to say you can’t afford it. Not after I covered for you through all of this.”

Bianca had no way out.

She paid what she could.

Grant covered the rest.

He tried to fix things between us.

“Serena, let’s start over.”

I didn’t want to hear it.

“Grant, how many times do I have to say this? We’re done.”

I couldn’t understand why he was still trying.

Grant’s voice went quiet.

“I never planned to leave you. The thing with Bianca: I thought once we got married, we’d naturally drift apart.

Different lives, different families. I just wanted to hold on to what we had a little longer while I still could.”

But he never noticed the obvious.

He’d already chosen her. He just didn’t know it.

I wasn’t giving him another chance.

The next time I took my mom to physical therapy, Elliot was there. Grant noticed.

His face changed instantly.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

Grant and Elliot hadn’t spoken in years.

Elliot had ignored every one of Grant’s messages.

He looked past Grant, straight at my parents and me.

“I’m driving them to therapy.”

Grant got in his face.

“What the hell, Elliot? You knew where she was those first few days? I was tearing my hair out looking for her, and you just sat there?”

Elliot knocked his hand away.

“Yeah, I did. And why exactly was it my job to help you? Do you really need someone to spell out what you

did to her?”

“Even if you’d known, it wouldn’t have changed anything. Consider it me saving you the embarrassment.”

“Is that what this is? You’re still holding a grudge after all this time?”

Elliot actually laughed.

“This has nothing to do with you. I just couldn’t stand by and watch Serena go through this alone.”

Grant swung at him.

“You want her, don’t you? That’s what this is about, you son of a bitch.”

Elliot hit him right back.

“Not everyone thinks like you. Serena’s my friend. She’s always been my friend. Is it so hard to believe

someone would help her without an agenda? Why don’t you ask yourself what you did as her fiancé?”

Grant had nothing to say to that.

I took Grant aside at a coffee shop. We needed to talk.

“Grant, the wedding is never happening. Can you please stop? You know the truth now.”

He looked like I’d hit him.

“We spent five years together. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”

I gave him the only answer I had. I just shook my head.

He left without another word.

His parents showed up after that. More than once.

“He made a mistake, one mistake. You know how good he’s been to you. Serena, does it really have to end this way?”

Yes. It did.

Wasn’t “just one mistake” exactly how he ruined the wedding?

I could give him one chance.

The problem was it wouldn’t stop at one. It never did.

After I turned him down, Grant cut Bianca off completely.

He wanted nothing to do with her.

Bianca had been so sure he was bluffing.

She never expected him to actually mean it.

She called him, crying.

“So I’m the villain now? I never put a gun to your head, Grant. You chose to take my side every time. You

could’ve said no.”

Grant drank through the days.

She’s right, he thought. “I deserve this. I should’ve said no.”

He was past crying.

He hated himself for being so blind.

He’d had the person he loved right in front of him, and he’d looked the other way.

He’d put Serena through hell.

He was the one who ruined everything.

After enough rejections, he stopped trying. He didn’t have it in him anymore.

He watched Elliot settle into the space beside her.

He didn’t know if Elliot wanted more than friendship.

But he’d lost the right to ask.

All he could do was watch her life get better without him.

He finally understood why he’d taken Serena for granted.

She’d loved him too easily. And he’d mistaken that for permanence.

He’d been so sure she’d always be there, especially once they were engaged.

Nothing could possibly be bad enough to make her leave.

Five years. It was supposed to end differently.

Now there was nothing left.
