“To protect the no-dating policy you created, you used me to cover up your relationship with Tessa.”

“Five years, Adrian. Five years, and you never even had the courage to acknowledge her as your girlfriend.”

“People at the company kept calling her the other woman.”

“If I were Tessa, I wouldn’t have been able to take it either.”

“So tell me, Adrian. What matters more to you-your pride or love?”

Adrian had no answer.

Suddenly, he remembered the hurricane.

He remembered pushing me out of the car before I could even grab my phone.

He remembered me standing outside the county clerk’s office, drenched and shivering, the hurt clear in my

eyes.

He remembered my hand trembling as I signed the termination notice.

And he remembered me walking past him on unsteady feet and saying,

“Adrian, you really disappointed me.”

He had always assumed I would wait for him.

I had always listened to him.

Trusted him.

Loved him.

So he believed that no matter what he did, I would wait until he sorted everything out and came back to

marry me.

But this time, I didn’t wait.

I ended my lease.

Moved to another city.

Found a new job.

And left without giving him a single chance to explain.

Celeste looked at Adrian standing there in stunned silence and gave a cold laugh.

“Adrian, I finally see you for who you really are.”

“You’re selfish, self-centered, arrogant, and full of yourself.”

“Don’t worry. I’m done chasing after you.”

“I’ll divorce you.”

With that, Celeste turned on her heel and walked out of the airport without looking back.

Adrian didn’t follow her.

He stayed frozen there for a long time.

Four hours later, my flight landed in Westbridge.

The moment I turned on my phone, messages flooded the screen.

Most of them were from Adrian.

[The landlord said you moved out. Where did you go?】

【Tessa, stop sulking. Come back. I’m waiting for you in Baycrest.]

[I canceled the wedding with Celeste. Come back. We need to talk. I’ll marry you!]

The messages kept coming.

Starting at eight-thirty that morning, he had sent one almost every ten or fifteen minutes.

The later they got, the more urgent they sounded.

I skimmed a few and stopped reading.

The rest were from mutual friends.

Some asked where I had gone.

Some asked about my new job.

Others tried to fish for information about what was going on with me.

I guessed Adrian had put them up to it.

He had contacted everyone who might know where I was.

I ignored all of them.

I switched to a new SIM card, then waved toward the person waiting for me in the arrivals area.

“Over here!”

“I see you! Tessa, welcome to Westbridge!”

Three years passed.

I thought I would never see Adrian again.

But one day, I opened a file my assistant had handed me and froze.

The project lead for our new joint project was Adrian.

Before I could fully process it, someone knocked twice on my office door.

A coworker stepped inside and asked casually,

“Want me to go instead?”

“Things between you two used to be pretty awkward.”

I shook my head.

“It’s fine.”

“I’m going there to discuss the partnership, not to deal with our past.”

My coworker nodded.

When I returned to Baycrest, so much of it still looked familiar.

And yet somehow, it felt different.

The reception was already crowded with guests.

Adrian was talking with our Director of North American Operations.

He smiled politely.

“Your company has grown quickly over the past few years.”

“Vale Group is honored to have the opportunity to work with you.”

The Director waved off the compliment.

“You’re too kind.”

“I’ve only recently transferred back from overseas, so I’m still getting familiar with operations here.”

“Our regional office brought in a new director a few years ago. She’s very capable.”

“This is a good chance for me to introduce you.”

“She just wrapped up another project and should be here any minute.”

“Judging by the time, she should be arriving now.”

Then he looked past Adrian toward the entrance.

His eyes landed on me.

He lifted a hand and waved me over.

“Come here. Let me introduce you.”

“This is Mr. Adrian Vale of Vale Group.”

“And this is our Marketing Director.”

Adrian followed the Director’s gaze and turned around.

The smile vanished from his face the instant he saw me.

“…Tessa?”
