I remained calm.

I walked over in my heels and held out my hand to him.

“Mr. Vale, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Tessa, the Marketing Director.”

Adrian didn’t move.

He just stared at me, his wineglass suspended in midair. He seemed to have forgotten to shake my hand.

The Director prompted him awkwardly.

“Mr. Vale?”

Adrian finally snapped out of it and took my hand.

“Tessa. It’s been a long time.”

I quickly withdrew my hand, picked up a glass of champagne from a server’s tray, and raised it slightly

toward him.

“It has.”

“Mr. Vale, I hope we’ll work well together.”

The Director quickly sensed the tension between us.

He made an excuse and stepped away, leaving Adrian and me alone.

Adrian looked at me for a long moment before finally speaking.

“So you went to Westbridge.”

“I looked for you for a long time after you left.”

“It’s been three years. You’ve lost weight.”

“And you’re even more beautiful now.”

I gave a small smile and accepted the compliment calmly.

“Thank you.”

“Tomorrow, I’ll bring my team over for the project meeting.”

“If there’s nothing else, I still need to go greet a few long-standing clients, so I’ll excuse myself.”

I gave him a polite nod and turned to leave.

“Tessa!”

Adrian sounded anxious.

He reached out and grabbed my wrist.

I looked down at his hand.

He quickly realized it was inappropriate and let go.

My voice carried a clear warning.

“Mr. Vale, please keep an appropriate distance.”

“I worked hard to get where I am today.”

“I don’t want people saying what they used to say-that I used you to get ahead, or that I deliberately threw

myself at you.”

Adrian fell silent.

Then he lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know I did a lot of things back then that hurt you.”

“And I abolished Vale Group’s no-dating policy three years ago.”

“Did you know that?”

“Did you see the news?”

I nodded.

The story had spread all over the internet at the time.

“I saw it.”

“That’s good.”

“So?”

Adrian looked at me.

“So there’s nothing stopping us from being together anymore.”

“And you don’t even work for Vale Group now.”

I almost laughed.

“So your point is, just because you want me back, I’m supposed to run straight back to you?”

“Adrian, wake up.”

“We’re over.”

He heard the sarcasm in my voice and hurried to explain.

“No. That’s not what I meant.”

“I just want you to give me a chance to start over.”

“Celeste and I are divorced.”

“There’s nothing standing between us anymore.”

“We can start over.”

“I’ll treat you right this time.”

I shook my head without hesitation.

“I don’t need that.”

When he still looked unconvinced, I repeated myself.

“I really don’t.”

“It’s been three years.”

“I’m not the same Tessa who used to focus all her attention on you.”

“I have my own career now. My own projects.”

“Love isn’t the most important thing in my life anymore.”

“And you’re part of my past.”

“If that’s all you wanted to say, then there’s nothing else to discuss.”

I turned and walked away.

This time, Adrian didn’t stop me.

But throughout the reception, I could feel his eyes on me.

He kept watching me until the event ended.

As I left the ballroom, the Director came over, clearly curious.

“What’s your relationship with Mr. Vale?”

I answered without hesitation.

“He’s my ex-boyfriend.”

“And he’s already been married to someone else once.”

The Director looked surprised, then immediately apologized.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“I was overseas at the time, so I assigned this project to you directly.”

I kept flipping through the documents in my hands.

“You don’t need to apologize.”

“Please trust my professionalism.”

“Our personal history won’t affect this project.”

The Director paused.

Then he clapped his hands once and smiled.

“Now I see why headquarters thinks so highly of you.”
