xThe bottle of ointment in Ava’s hand clattered to the floor.

She stood up, her face filled with disbelief.

“Florence, what did you just say? A mate?”

“No wonder you refused to come home. You betrayed Jaxson!”

It was only in this exact moment that Jaxson finally caught the scent of another wolf on me.

Like a sudden gale, he lunged forward. He clamped his hand around my wrist, dragging me close.

When he saw the fully marked mate bond on the side of my neck, his dominant Alpha aura crashed down on me like a tidal wave.

“Florence, who is the stray mutt you’ve been sleeping with?”

“You’re pretending not to know me just because of him?!”

He looked completely unhinged.

Dragging me by the arm, he hauled me upstairs and threw me onto the bed.

“I’m going to see exactly what other marks that bastard left on your body.”

“Get off me!” I screamed, fighting with everything I had. I swung my hand and slapped him hard across the face.

“If you touch me, my mate will rip you to shreds!”

Before the words could fully leave my mouth, he kissed me brutally.

Jaxson tore at my clothes with one hand and pressed down on my body with the other.

He bit and sucked at my neck, letting out raw, broken growls from his throat.

“You’ve grown bold, Florence. You won’t let me touch you? Then who do you let?”

I resisted while sobbing, but he suddenly froze.

His hand hadn’t met the smooth skin he expected. Instead, his fingers brushed against a thick, raised network of crisscrossed scars.

Jaxson’s hand began to tremble. He reached out, trying to turn on the bedside lamp.

Right then, the bedroom door was pounded violently.

Ava’s delicate, sobbing voice drifted in from outside.

“Jaxson, I had a nightmare about your older brother again. He was beating me, screaming that he wanted revenge!”

The Alpha immediately let go of me and rushed out, pulling her tightly into his arms.

“Shh, Ava. It wasn’t your fault.”

“He attacked you first. If you hadn’t defended yourself, he would have killed you.”

“It’s all in the past. Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”

His gentle, soothing murmurs drifted back into the room.

I lay on the bed, shivering uncontrollably as I scrambled to button my shirt.

When I pushed my hair back, my fingertips brushed against the cold tears on my cheeks.

I wanted to leave, but the moment I approached the door, a powerful force blasted me backward.

With a loud crash, I hit the wall hard.

I tried to initiate a mindlink, but there was only dead silence.

When I caught the faint scent of dried herbs, I realized what had happened.

This room had been sealed with a containment barrier.

Without the caster’s permission, I couldn’t leave, and I couldn’t contact the outside world.

Even the mate bond connection to Alistair was temporarily blocked.

Alistair. When are you going to find me?

I sat in the dark room all night.

It wasn’t until the next morning that a maid opened the door.

She swept away the containment powder on the floor, looking completely indifferent.

Jaxson was downstairs, reading the financial section of The Northern Wolf Daily.

When he saw me, he gave his orders.

“Ava wants some of your chicken soup. Go make it.”

“And Mike’s milk needs to be at room temperature.”

“Iron my shirts when you’re done. The maids aren’t as careful as you.”

Those commands felt almost hardcoded into my DNA.

My legs actually took a step toward the kitchen before I caught myself.

The moment my hand touched the apron hanging on the wall, I snapped out of it.

I spun around, shaking with rage.

“You’re keeping me prisoner! I’m going to call the Council Enforcers!”

Jaxson looked up, tossing the newspaper onto the table. He sneered.

“Florence, what kind of act is this?”

Before I could speak, my eyes caught the front page of the newspaper.

There, in bold print, was a photo of Alpha Alistair Thorne attending a charity gala last week.

I pointed at the image, my voice trembling with desperate excitement. “He is my mate! If you don’t believe me, call him yourself!”
