When he noticed me, his instincts pushed him forward. But his steps faltered and he froze in place.

We stared at each other for a long moment. I was about to turn and leave when he finally spoke.

“Aurora… can we just talk? Five minutes. Please.”

I looked at the stubborn, desperate set of his face. In the end, I didn’t refuse. I turned and walked toward the

café.

His eyes lit up. He scrambled to follow.

The coffee arrived. He wrapped both hands around his cup and said nothing. The silence stretched.

I was just about to finish my drink and walk out when he finally spoke. His voice was thick and cracked.

He told me he’d rushed back that day. He’d raced to the Medical Center, only to discover the cliff fall was a

lie.

Vivian and a few pack members had cooked up the whole story just to trick him into coming back.

Once the lie was exposed, Vivian took the opportunity to confess her feelings.

She’d said, “Aurora doesn’t want you anymore anyway. We might as well become mates.”

“I never thought… she still wanted to be my mate.” His face was twisted with regret. “If I had just listened to you from the start and kept my distance from her, we wouldn’t be here now… Aurora, I really…”

I let him finish. Then I set my cup down slowly.

“Rhett, you still don’t get it. The problem was never Vivian. It was always you.”

He blinked, confused. Like he didn’t understand.

“You knew exactly what was happening. And you loved it.”

“You craved her attention. You loved being wanted by two women at once. You just never thought I’d actually follow through. That I’d really walk away.”

“No! That’s not true!”

He denied it fiercely, reaching for my hand with sudden desperation. “I cut ties with her! I don’t listen to anything she or anyone else says anymore. I swear, I’ll never see her again!”

“Aurora, trust me. One more time. Just one more chance. Please. We still have a chance…”

He pulled out the moonstone necklace he’d given me the day he marked me as his mate. He tried to fasten it around my neck. I stepped back, letting his hands fall on empty air.

He stared at me, stunned.

I kept my voice calm. “It’s over, Rhett. The only reason I agreed to sit down with you was to say this clearly.

We’re done.”

“Before, no matter what you did, I forgave you. I kept lowering my standards, kept giving you chances. And you mistook that for your own charm working on me.”

I paused and took a sip of coffee, watching the cream melt into the dark liquid.

“The truth is, I loved you so much I couldn’t stand to see you struggle.”

The café was quiet. His ragged breathing echoed in the silence.

I didn’t say anything else. I stood up, paid the bill, and walked away without looking back.

The next morning, I booked the first flight back to Moonhold.

There was nothing left here for me to hold onto. Staying any longer would only suffocate me.

I was just about to pull away in my car when someone slammed their palm against the window.

I looked up.

Her face was twisted with fury, almost unrecognizable. She banged on the glass, shouting my name.

I had no choice. I pushed the door open and stepped out, ready to end this once and for all.

Up close, I could see the state she was in. Her makeup was smeared from tears. Her clothes were wrinkled and disheveled.

The second I was out of the car, she launched into me.

“Aurora! It’s you again! What the hell did you whisper to Rhett?”

“Why won’t he see me anymore? He said he’s cutting all contact. Did you whisper poison in his ear again?”

“I can’t believe this! You two broke the mate bond months ago, and you still got him eating out of your hand?! How the hell do you do it, you manipulative whore?”
