But the real world didn’t agree with her.

Bad news travels fast. Because Jack had been so publicly furious, the story of the company’s “honey-trap” negotiations spread like wildfire through the industry.

Their reputation was completely destroyed.

Investors who’d been on the fence pulled out. Suppliers got scared of not being paid and pulled out overnight.

In less than a month, the company went under, the money was just gone. Mr. Thornton was hiding from his creditors, deep in debt.

Emily, however, still thought she was a star. She believed she could walk into any office and

demand a corner suite.

She still wore her expensive suits and heels every day, strutting into office towers.

Too bad she was in for a very rude awakening.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Foster. You’re not a good fit for this position.”

“I apologize, but this role has been filled.”

“Ms. Foster, we’re a small company. We’re not worthy of your… talents.”

After two weeks of slammed doors, Emily finally snapped. She was rejected by yet another

mid-sized company, and she slammed her hand on the receptionist’s desk.

“Are you kidding me? Do you know who I am? I was a sales director for five years! I have a huge

client list! I’m slumming it, applying for an admin position here, and you’re saying no?”

The young HR girl looked scared, but she tried to help. “Ms. Foster… did you… make someone angry?”

“What?” Emily blinked.

The HR girl lowered her voice and pointed at her computer screen. “Your name is on the industry

blacklist.”

The big companies were locked tight. The small reputable ones were too scared. Her credit card bills were due. Her rent was late.

She finally had to start hitting up the shady little outfits, just hoping for anything.

She ended up at a shell company that sold fake vitamins.

Her first day, the boss called her into his office. He was a fat, greasy guy with piggy eyes that crawled all over her.

“So, Emily, I hear you used to be a sales director? That means you can hold your liquor, right?”

Emily forced a smile and nodded. “I can handle myself.”

“Great. There’s a dinner meeting tonight, and you’re coming with me.” He pulled something out of

his drawer and threw it at her. “Put this on. It’ll show the clients we mean business.”
