She Dressed Me Like Bait, Not Knowing the Shark Was My Brother Chapter 07

He stumbled toward me, almost begging. “It was all a misunderstanding! I’ve already chewed

Emily out for being an idiot! Nicole… no, Ms. Ryan. Please, just come back.”

“I’ll give you the VP job. Name your salary. You can be the boss. I’ll be your VP. Just don’t leave.”

The same coworkers who had frozen me out and followed Emily were suddenly changing their tune.

“Yeah, Nicole, we can’t do this without you.”

“I always knew Ms. Ryan was the most capable one. Emily can’t hold a candle to you.”

Looking at these fair-weather colleagues made me feel sick.

“Mr. Thornton,” I cut off his groveling. “Coming back? Not a chance. But I’ll give you one warning

since we used to work together.”

I walked over to Emily’s computer, pulled up a file, and pointed to a line of red-highlighted data.

“Ms. Foster manipulated the core data on the Lane Holdings project to get ahead faster. When this blows up, Lane Holdings won’t just sue you, they’ll bury you in court.”

“You’ll owe more in penalties than your company is worth. Instead of begging me, you might want to figure out how to plug that hole.”

I grabbed my stuff from my old desk, and Sophie and I walked out without looking back.

Behind us, I heard Mr. Thornton’s enraged howl. “Emily! What did you do?!”

Sophie and I celebrated my escape from that hellhole with a massive barbecue platter.

Back at the office, Mr. Thornton started digging through every single one of Emily’s old projects.

The hole was even bigger than I’d said.

She hadn’t just faked the data for Lane Holdings. To cover her previous theft, she’d been

embezzling company funds. She’d even tampered with several contracts.

Mr. Thornton practically had a stroke.

He threw a stack of papers in Emily’s face. “You stole from me! You’ve faked data left and right! Were you trying to destroy my company?”

me another chance…”

“A chance?” He was shaking with rage. “Did you give me one? You took every shot I had! Hayes blacklisted us, Lane canceled your deal, and now you’ve shredded my books and accounts!”

“Get out! Get out now, before I call the cops!”

At the threat of a lawsuit, Emily’s mask of humility finally cracked.

She stood up, her fake sincerity replaced by a sneer. “Fine. I’m out of here. Like I wanted to stay in this dump.”

“You think I was doing you a favor? With my resume and my contacts, I could get a job anywhere. Have fun going bankrupt, you fat loser.”

She slammed the door behind her.
