Derek froze. He thought back.

The more he thought about it, the more guilty he felt.

He couldn’t remember when it had started, but he’d gradually stopped caring about me.

He barely paid me any attention.

Instead, he knew everything about another woman what she liked, what she loved to eat, what

she was into, what put her in a bad mood.

Even with a thousand miles between them, he knew exactly what was going on with her.

Derek couldn’t say a word.

The officer gathered up the papers.

“We’ll deal with the rest after your wife wakes up.”

“One more thing. Your mother has also been arrested for conspiring with you to imprison the

victim.”

u’ll be forgiven, we’ll see.”

eft the interrogation room.

e moment Derek heard the news, he buried his face in his hands and broke down.

The OR light finally went out.

The doctor stepped out and frowned at the empty hallway.

He was holding a critical condition notice, the family signature line still blank.

“Where’s the family? I was told they were here.”

The nurse answered. “They were. The police took them away.”

“They did?”

The doctor sighed and looked down at the surgical report.

“All right. Get in touch with her other family as soon as possible.”

He then wrote a brief note beside my name.

[Fetal resuscitation unsuccessful. Maternal condition remains under observation.]

At three in the morning, I was wheeled out of the OR

When I came to, it was already the next afternoon.

The room was quiet except for the steady beep of the heart monitor.

I reached for my stomach on instinct. It was flat. Empty. Nothing left.

The door opened, and a woman rushed in.

Her eyes were badly swollen, her hair was a mess, a crumpled train ticket still clutched in her hand.

“Clara…”

“Mom!”

She rushed to my bedside, wanting to hug me but afraid to touch me.

My dad walked in behind her and stopped by the door, his eyes red. He didn’t say a word.

“Dad, you came too?” My voice was barely a whisper.

The moment he heard me call him Dad, his tears fell.

My parents didn’t ask what happened. They’d already heard everything from the doctor.

The baby was seven months along, fully formed. A girl.

“Mom, Dad, I’m sorry for making you worry.”

“Why are you apologizing to us?” My mom’s voice was hoarse and breaking.

“You’re not the one who should be apologizing. They are–those Hales!”

“They promised they’d take care of you, and look what they did. They’re all the same!”

My dad reached out and gently touched my hair.

“Your mom’s right. Whatever happens from now on we’ve got your back.”

“Don’t try to carry it all on your own.”

I looked at them and nodded.

I didn’t realize I was crying until tears started streaming down my face.

For twenty years, I’d never cried like that.

But that night, I cried out twenty years‘ worth of tears.
