He was clingy.

Every day, he texted and video-called me.

Sophie reached out twice, asking me to dinner.

I turned her down.

She sighed. “Honestly, I wanted you to see Grant. He hasn’t been doing well lately.”

I held the phone tighter. “Grant and I just weren’t meant to be.”

The last time I saw him

was in my grandmother’s hospital room.

She was being discharged that day.

When I went to pick her up, I saw Grant.

He was already on his way out.

He didn’t see me.

His back was to me as he waited for the elevator.

He wore a suit and looked like he’d come straight from a meeting.

My grandmother walked over to me.

“That Mr. Whitmore is a friend of yours, isn’t he? He’s been visiting me for a while now, but he always asks me not to tell you.”

“He knew I was going home today and flew down from New York just to see me.”

My eyelids fluttered. “He’s been coming here?”

Grandma nodded.

“Every time he comes, he sits and talks with me. He’s very patient.”

You’re here now. I’ll call him back and we can have lunch together.”

I took her hand.

“No.”

“I have a boyfriend.”

Grandma blinked.

Right then, the elevator arrived.

Before Grant stepped inside,

he glanced back.

I quickly pulled Grandma out of sight.

After the elevator doors closed,

Grandma said, “He has feelings for you. I can tell.”

I changed the subject.

“My boyfriend’s downstairs. Want to have lunch with us?”

People moved through the hospital around us.

Grandma looked at me and sighed almost inaudibly. “All right.”
