I looked up and saw Grant.

He looked like he hadn’t slept much.

Faint shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes.

Maybe it was because the living room was so small, but suddenly I felt short of breath.

The place where he’d gripped my wrist still burned.

He gave a quiet acknowledgment. Then, as though something had just occurred to him, he said,

“This neighborhood isn’t safe. Too many people coming and going. If you want to move, I can

arrange it.”

I blinked.

I’d lived here for two years and had gone through several roommates.

It honestly wasn’t as bad as he made it sound.

Grant’s standards were just too high.

He didn’t press. He only nodded, unconcerned.

“Fine. Your call.”

Right then, his phone rang.

It was Vivian.

He glanced at me.

Then he stepped aside to take the call.

The movers Grant hired worked quickly.

Half an hour later, every last one of Vivian’s things was gone.

The apartment went quiet.

I stayed in my room and didn’t go out to speak to Grant.

Then he knocked on my door.

“The key’s on the table.”

I told him okay.

I knew this might be the last time we ever saw each other.

That night, Vivian sent me a video.

Her new apartment filled the screen.

She stood smiling in front of bright floor-to-ceiling windows.

For the final two seconds, a man’s figure appeared in the background./

He lounged on the couch, flipping through a business magazine.
