The Day She Carried My Husband’s Child, I Left That Family Chapter 05

The once solemn Army cemetery was in ruins.

“How… how did this happen?”

Graham stood frozen in shock.

Mara’s father stared at the scene, unable to believe what he was seeing.

The headstone at Mara’s mother’s grave had been smashed into rubble, and there were

unexplained splashes of blood on the ground.

“Stop! Everyone stop!”

Graham’s roar cut across the cemetery, and the Army engineers immediately stopped what they

were doing.

“C-Colonel Mercer, weren’t you the one who told us to level the cemetery? We’re almost finished. Is this what you wanted?”

Graham stared at them in disbelief.

“When did I tell you to start today?”

“You have twenty-four hours. Put everything back the way it was!”

It took everyone a long moment to recover from the shock.

Mara’s brother clenched his fists, trembling all over.

“Graham, you said you were only going to scare Mara. How could you actually have her mother’s

grave destroyed?”

Her best friend looked equally stunned.

“Exactly. You know how much her mother’s grave means to her. How could you…”

“I never told anyone to actually destroy her mother’s grave!” Graham snapped.

“I’ll find out who did this.”

Tessa immediately looked frightened.

“Who could do something this cruel?”

“Mara misses her mother terribly. Who would dare wreck her grave like this?”

“Do you think maybe Mara did this herself and is trying to frame me so everyone will abandon

me…?”

As she spoke, her voice broke.

She started to sob.

Graham hesitated.

“So that’s what happened…”

After all, guards were posted there year-round, and access was tightly controlled. No work crew

should have been able to enter without authorization from his command.

And Graham hadn’t even given the order yet.

How could anyone have leveled the place before he did?

Mara’s father scoffed.

“I never thought she’d become this spoiled. She’d even desecrate her own mother’s grave without a thought for her mother’s memory!”

Her brother immediately agreed.

“This is my fault. I’ve spoiled her too much. If she’d go this far with Mom’s grave, I’m going to straighten her out when we get back,”

Tessa hurried to intervene.

“Please, both of you, don’t blame Mara.”

“She only did this because she cares about all of you. She just hates me. I don’t want everyone fighting because of me.”

Everyone sighed.

“If only Mara were half as thoughtful as you.”

“Tessa, stop blaming yourself.”

Graham tried to comfort her, but his gaze kept drifting toward the blood on the ground.

For reasons he couldn’t explain, a sense of dread settled over him.

On the way back, he called Mara over and over.

Every call either returned a busy tone or failed with a lost-signal message.

The others tried too, with the same result.

“What’s going on?”

“Isn’t she just trying to get us to fuss over her? Why isn’t she answering?”

“This is strange.”

Graham grew more and more tense.

He went to the field hospital alone and headed straight for Mara’s office.

The moment he saw the red paint that still hadn’t been completely scrubbed away, rage surged through him.

“Who did this? Who called Mara a homewrecker?!”

He grabbed a scrub brush and attacked the paint, but it wouldn’t come off.

As her coworkers helped clean the office, they shook their heads.

“We never believed she was a homewrecker. You and Dr. Whitaker always seemed so devoted to

each other.”

“But there are more and more posts attacking her on the command’s internal forum. They’re calling her a murderer and saying she came between… you and Tessa.”

Graham threw the brush to the floor.

“She’s my wife. If anyone spreads that lie again, they’ll answer to me!”

One of the younger nurses tried to reassure him.

“But I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. She said she’s about to transfer to the peacekeeping medical team, and she won’t be back in the States for five years.”
