The Day She Carried My Husband’s Child, I Left That Family Chapter 04

“Mara! How dare you attack her?”

Graham shoved me away, his entire body shaking.

Tessa lay in a pool of blood, clutching her abdomen, her face twisted in pain.

“I don’t blame Mara for hating me. I know she can’t stand having me around, but I never thought she’d actually hurt the baby…”

Graham looked at me with nothing but disappointment.

“How did I ever marry someone this vicious? I must have been blind!”

With that, he scooped Tessa into his arms and rushed her to the ER at the regional Army medical center.

Family members passing through the hallway screamed. Others cursed at me.

“She’s an Army doctor, and she tried to kill someone!”

“She’s a doctor—she’s supposed to save lives. Does she have no conscience at all?”

I stood frozen, still gripping the surgical scissors, my clothes and skin spattered with blood.

Within a dozen or so minutes, my secure communications device was flooded with internal complaints and petitions demanding disciplinary action, and my white coat was splashed with mess-hall slop.

When my father arrived at the regional Army medical center, he slapped me hard across the face.

“How did I end up with a daughter like you? Tessa is your own sister. How could you do that to her?”

My brother stared at me with bloodshot eyes.

“Don’t ever call me your brother again. Tessa is my only sister!”

My best friend glared at me. In front of everyone, she ripped off the matching dog-tag pendant we both wore, threw it to the floor, and made it clear that our friendship was over.

When I returned to my office at the field hospital, my desk was covered with “HOMEWRECKER” and “MURDERER” scrawled across it in red paint.

But homewreckers were what my mother had hated most when she was alive.

Still in a daze, I immediately posted on the command’s internal forum to defend myself.

[Tessa is a homewrecker just like her mother. I’m innocent!]

To my shock, my father immediately responded by uploading the marriage certificate showing that he was married to Tessa’s mother.

[Tessa’s mother isn’t a homewrecker.]

Seeing the official seal and filing date, I was stunned.

The records that had supposedly documented my parents’ marriage had been forged Army spousal paperwork all along.

Something inside me finally broke.

Just then, the administrator at the Army cemetery called.

“Dr. Whitaker, something’s wrong. There are people gathered around your mother’s grave. You need to get here now!”

By the time I stumbled into the Army cemetery, an Army excavator was smashing my mother’s headstone again and again.

“Stop! Stop right now!”

The roar of the machinery swallowed my voice.

Then the excavator’s tires rolled over both my legs.

My scream tore through the air.

Without thinking, I called Graham.

He didn’t answer.

I tried again, but the call wouldn’t go through. The line was blocked.

I had nothing left.

I collapsed into the blood beneath me, limp and broken.

A security video from Tessa suddenly appeared on my secure communications device.

In the footage, Graham was in an office at command headquarters, kissing Tessa deeply. When he spoke, his voice was choked and hoarse.

“Tessa, we’ll have another baby.”

“I’ll have her mother’s grave torn down right now. I won’t let you or your mother be treated unfairly.”

The video replayed again and again, taking what little warmth remained inside me with it.

Then Tessa’s messages started coming in.

[Your mother was the homewrecker. You’re no different.]

[Homewreckers should know their place. You and your mother can go to hell together.]

With nothing left but despair, I finally let my eyes fall shut.

Three hours later, Graham arrived at the Army cemetery with several others, ready to make me pay on Tessa’s behalf.

But the moment he stepped into the burial grounds, he swayed on his feet and nearly fell.
