Scorned by the Beastmen, Loved by their Healer Chapter 07

Huer looked at him.

“What do you think?”

“You can’t fake these memories.”

Kasdan clutched his chest like he couldn’t breathe.

“She saved me…”

“She’s the one who saved me…” He raked through his hair.

“And I called her gross…”

His voice trailed off.

Then it turned into sobs.

Skarlarton dropped to his knees.

Both hands on the floor.

His shoulders shook hard.

“I hit her… I didn’t believe her…”

“Mocked her in that shack,” he said. “No food, no water, for three days…”

“I’m her brother…”

His voice was so hoarse it was barely there.

“What did I do…”

The images kept playing.

They rolled to the last part.

It was the day Huer carried me out of the shack.

I was thin as a sheet of paper.

My lips were cracked and bleeding.

Huer’s hands were shaking when he held me.

Then came Huer weaving me a flower crown.

I was laughing in a field of flowers.

Laughing so happily.

But laughing turned into crying.

“Huer, thank you.”

He looked at me then. “From now on, I’ll always be good to you.”

“There is no from now on.”

I rested against him. “Let me lean on you for a bit.”

“Just for a bit.”

The memories stopped.

The cabin went dead quiet.

No one spoke.

Just muffled sobs.

Kasdan was the first to break down.

He crouched on the floor, both hands over his face.

His shoulders kept jerking.

“She kept taking it…”

He shook his head in disbelief. “She never said a word…”

“I thought she was tough. I thought she couldn’t feel pain…”

Elim sat by the wall, head buried in his knees.

He didn’t make a sound.

But I could see his shoulders shaking.

“She said it.”

His voice was low and dull.

“She said it so many times. She said it wasn’t her.”

Eyes wide and shocked. “She said Amy set her up.”

“But I didn’t believe her.”

“Not once.” he spat out.

Skarlarton suddenly stood up.

His eyes were red. “Amy…”

“I’m going to kill her.”

He turned to go.

Huer stopped him.

“Not yet.”

“She’ll pay for it,” he assured him. “But not now.”

“Right now, it’s Sanna’s funeral.”

I floated in midair.

Watching each of them.

Their tears.

Their regret.

Their shaking hands.

I felt nothing.

No more hate.

No more pain.

Just tired.

So, so tired.

“Sanna.”

Huer suddenly lifted his head.

He looked toward where I floated.

My heart skipped a beat.

Can he see me?

“I know you’re there.”

His voice was very soft.

“I know you can hear me.”

“Don’t worry,” he reassured me.

“I’ll make every one of them answer to you.”

My eyes burned.

But I had no tears left.

“Huer…”

I whispered.

He couldn’t hear me.

But the corner of his mouth curved a little.

Like he was smiling.

And like he was crying.
