My Alpha Let Our Pup Die for Her Familiar Chapter 08

She turned to leave. Caius watched her bones with desperate, pleading eyes.

But even after Poppy vanished completely from sight, her bones stayed intact.

Every sweet word Poppy had ever spoken was a lie. Only this contempt was real.

Caius shattered. He begged the nurse tending to him to call me.

Any call from him, I refused to pick up.

He had no money in his account. He couldn’t afford a caregiver.

At first, since the doctors knew of his connection to me, they let him stay in a private room. Someone checked on him occasionally. He maintained the barest shred of dignity.

But as the days passed and no family ever paid his bills, Caius was moved to the most basic shared

ward.

The ward held eight beds.

When Caius lost control of his bowels, the stench filled the entire room.

Nobody had to say a word. The disgust on their faces made Caius want to die.

“I’m sorry-I really can’t help it. Just bear with me. When my wife comes to take care of me, this won’t happen anymore.” He gave this explanation over and over.

At first, some people believed him.

But soon, whenever Caius had another accident, the relatives of other patients-who couldn’t take the smell-would slap him across the face.

“That’s disgusting! You can’t even control your own body-what’s the difference between you and a damn dog? Get the hell out of here!”

“It’s already hard enough taking care of someone sick, and you keep making everything worse!”

A furious relative dragged Caius off the bed and dumped him in the hallway.

He lay there, covered in his own filth. Every passerby steered clear.

Humiliated beyond words, but paralyzed from the neck down, Caius could only beg. “Let me back

Please please let me back in. I can’t control it. I’m not doing it on purpose. I just can’t contro
it.”

Helplessness and shame cracked his voice open.

He begged for just a little patience.

And every time he opened his mouth to beg, he thought of Eira. That sweet pup with a terminal illness who always told him it didn’t hurt-who only ever wanted him to stay a little longer.

Why had he been so damn impatient back then?

If he’d saved Eira instead of that cat, he wouldn’t be living like this now.

Regret swallowed him whole.

He started dreaming of Eira constantly. He stopped eating. He stopped drinking.

The hospital, afraid he’d die on their watch, sent me a notice. They hoped I’d talk to him.

But… the curse that condemned Caius to die in agony came from me. How could I ever soften?

“We’re divorced. Don’t contact me about him again.”

I got the words out, cold and final, and ended the call.

Three months later, Caius-reduced to skin and bones-died in poverty and pain.

Until the very last second before his eyes shut, he was still muttering apologies.

Out of basic human decency, I sent his body to the crematorium.

But even his ashes irritated me. So I flushed them down the sewer.

At last, every curse I’d placed on Caius had been fulfilled. The weight on my chest finally lifted.

I bought a plane ticket and flew to the Mediterranean to disappear into the sun.

While I was there, news of Poppy kept trickling in.

Without Caius, Poppy-hooked on the good life-could only keep hunting for a new rich man.

But every time she zeroed in on a target and confessed her undying devotion, her bones would snap.

Because of my curse, every lie she told was glaringly obvious.

Nobody fell for her act.

So after more than half a year of scheming, Poppy had nothing to show for it except every bone in her body, broken again and again.

She couldn’t take the pain anymore. One night, drunk out of her mind, she jumped off a high-rise.

Her death, sad to say, caused no ripples at all.

When the news reached me, I closed my eyes beneath the Mediterranean sun and made a silent

promise.

“Eira, the world is so big. Mommy’s going to see everything you never got to see. And when we meet again, I’ll tell you all about it. Okay?”

A breeze lifted the ends of my hair.

It was Eira answering me.

Okay, Mommy.
