Fiancé?Sorry, My Memory Was Wiped Chapter 01

Fiancé?Sorry, My Memory Was Wiped Chapter 01

Just before dawn on our wedding day, I caught Marcus Hale with Evelyn Hart.

I’d been looking for him.

I figured Belladonna had sent him out on another emergency termination order.

Instead, I found him on the estate terrace.

Evelyn was in his arms.

He was kissing her.

I walked over without a word and struck for his throat.

My fingertips stopped right over his carotid artery.

Then Evelyn shoved me into the pool.

The back of my head slammed into the wall.

Cold swallowed my entire world.

Another one.

Right.

Every person who ever mattered to me eventually chose Evelyn.

Five years ago, I’d rescued her from a human-trafficking route in Southeast Asia.

She’d been human cargo.

Fifteen years old.

I took her in and treated her like a little sister.

I taught her intelligence analysis.

Brought her into my unit.

Even placed her in the safest position in the Logistics Unit.

She was sweet.

Always smiling.

Like some delicate flower raised inside a greenhouse.

After every bloody operation, she’d have a hot, home-cooked spread waiting for everyone.

The people in my unit risked their lives on every mission.

At first, they were wary of her.

Then her cooking gave them something that felt like home.

That was all it took.

“Finally. A real woman in this unit.”

They’d say it right in front of me.

And now Marcus was no different.

The man I’d loved for ten years.

The man who was supposed to exchange wedding rings with me that very day.

When I woke up in the clinic, Marcus was sitting beside my bed.

He didn’t ask about my injury.

“Shade, don’t get the wrong idea. Evie was just messing around with me.”

“If it bothers you, I’ll keep my distance.”

“You were the one who brought Evie here. She has no one.”

“She’s already been through enough. Don’t blame her.”

My eyes landed on the bullet scar near his collarbone.

He’d once taken a bullet for me.

I suddenly smiled.

“Marcus.”

“You afraid I’ll go after her myself?”

His expression darkened.

He grabbed my hand hard.

“I know you’re pissed, but Belladonna strictly forbids unauthorized infighting.”

“You know the rules.”

He didn’t answer my question.

“That’s the end of this.”

“We’ll move the wedding to next week.”

“Don’t give the rest of the unit something to gossip about.”

I pulled my hand free and stared out at the black night beyond the window.

Marcus opened his mouth again.

But his phone buzzed.

Sometimes I hate my trained eyes. Like now.

I caught the name on the screen.

I saw the name on the screen.

Evelyn.

Her message said she’d been badly frightened.

Her heart palpitations had started again.

Marcus glanced at me.

His voice softened.

“A new target just came up. I need to personally oversee the surveillance setup.”

“Get some rest.”

He didn’t wait for my answer.

He left in a hurry.

Fast.

Like his ass was on fire.

I never saw him again after that day.

I lay on the clinic bed and stared at an ad that had popped up on my phone.

[Memory Encoding. Start Over. New Life. New You.]

I didn’t tolerate betrayal.

Once something was tainted, I was done with it.

Marcus.

Those ten wasted years.

They could both go to hell.

When I walked out of the Project Phoenix facility, my mind felt freshly scrubbed.

Clear.

Empty.

Parts of my past felt locked inside an encrypted database.

I knew the files were there.

I just couldn’t access them anymore.

And I didn’t want to.

The memory overwrite procedure had two stages.

Seventy-two hours later, I still needed the final consolidation session.

Muscle memory guided me back to my apartment inside a Belladonna safe house.

The iris scanner cleared me.

The door unlocked.

Laughter and excited voices spilled from inside.

“That Eastern Europe operation was a huge success.”

“Evie earned top credit for the whole thing.”

“She really made Belladonna look good.”

I stepped into the living room.

Every voice died.

Marcus stood.

He looked irritated to see me.

“Your head still hurt?”

I touched the swelling on the back of my skull.

My voice stayed flat.

“I could collapse on this floor and bleed to death.”

“You still wouldn’t dare touch a single hair on her head.”

The room went painfully still.

Dana Reeves had been my partner for years.

She immediately stepped in to play peacemaker, smiling too brightly.

“Shade, glad you’re back.”

“Today’s Evie’s celebration party.”

“The intel she provided helped us successfully neutralize the target.”

“She even received a personal commendation from the big boss.”

Before I could refuse, Dana shoved a gift box into my hands.

“You were the one who brought Evie into Belladonna.”

“It’s only right that you give this to her yourself.”

I didn’t want trouble before I left.

So I walked straight over and held the box out to Evelyn.

She reached for it.

Our fingertips barely touched.

The box suddenly hit the floor.

Inside, the face of the high-end tactical watch shattered.

Evelyn’s eyes immediately turned red.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“Shade, I know you’re mad at me…”

“But this watch is from everyone.”

“How could you…”

Her voice broke.

“Are you still angry?”

“I was only joking around with Marc.”

“You misunderstood…”

The second she cried, everyone rushed to comfort her.

Then they turned on me.

“Jesus, Shade. Stop.”

“Evie cooks for everyone, and she just earned top credit.”

“Do you seriously have to ruin this for her?”

“You’re always walking around with that ice-cold face.”

“What are you trying to do?”

“What is this, some Hollywood drama?”

I looked from face to familiar face.

They somehow all felt like strangers now.

Disappointment settled deep in my chest.

And the person who looked most annoyed with me was my fiancé.

The man I’d wasted ten years on.

“Enough.”

Marcus’s voice carried the full weight of a Underboss.

The room fell silent.

He bent down, picked up the watch, and placed it back in my palm.

“Evie executed the big boss’s tactical plan this time.”

“She deserves the credit.”

“The broken gift isn’t a problem. I’ll have it repaired.”

“Then you’ll give it to her again.”

“But from now on, treat her better.”

His voice was low.

Almost soothing.

His fingers around my wrist weren’t.

He squeezed so hard my bones nearly cracked.

I ripped my hand free.

“No.”

I looked straight at him.

“I’m out.”
