My Missing Boyfriend Was Alive, So I Chose His Best Friend Chapter 05

Gavin came out of the bathroom. The clothes were clean. His expression was calm, but his eyes still held a trace of red.

I smiled. “Did your hand do a good job?”

He froze. Yeah, I’d caught his secret. I’d accepted his hugs and kisses. But we’d never gone further than that.

“That,” I said, pointing at my top, “did anything get on it?”

“It’s clean. You can check.”

“Relax. I’m not grossed out.”

I looked him over—six-one, body carved like some unfair work of art. In every way, he blew Tyler out of the water.

“I might need you to wash a dress later, too.”

“What?” He looked down at me, not yet catching on.

I’d already stripped and pushed onto my toes to kiss him. “Gavin, Tyler might actually be dead.” I let my voice wobble. “Stay with me tonight. Please.”

After that night, all it took was one crook of my finger and Gavin came. We had a rhythm nobody else did. It was better than anything I’d had with Tyler—more in sync, more pleasure. Their bodies weren’t even in the same league.

I honestly started regretting I hadn’t done this sooner. Why waste another second on a dead man?

Gavin didn’t notice anything off. I’d deleted that message thread. Whenever I got the chance, I borrowed his phone and checked the group chat.

The fact that I’d stopped chasing leads on Tyler must’ve rattled him. He tagged everyone.

Tyler: [What’s going on? Why did Hailey suddenly stop looking?]

One friend replied, [Bro, chill. She’s probably just exhausted.]

Tyler: [No way. She could be dead on her feet and she’d still look for me! Should I just come back?]

Princess Lila: [Hold the line! If you go back now, the whole plan is wasted.]

Tyler: [Nah, I need to go check on her tomorrow.]

Princess Lila: [Tyler, are you brain-dead? I worked my ass off designing this plan and you’re gonna bail on me? I’m a woman too—I know her little tricks. She probably caught wind of something and is trying to flush you out. Let me handle this!]

Tyler went quiet for a second, then caved. [Fine. Whatever you say.]

But he still couldn’t shake the nerves. That night, he called Gavin in secret. The call came in right as I was straddling Gavin. Unknown number. I pressed answer and held the phone to his ear.

“Yo, man. I just couldn’t relax—wanted to check in. How’s Hailey really doing?”

Gavin assumed I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end and answered vaguely. “She’s… fine.”

“Dude, Gavin, what’s up with your voice? You got a girl with you?”

“…You can tell?”

“Duh. You’re getting laid. Did I kill the mood? You gotta bring her out for us to meet sometime—”

That’s when I spoke. “Are you done? Pay attention.”

The line went dead silent. When Tyler’s voice came back, it had completely changed. “Gavin, who the hell are you with right now?”
