He Paid Me To Strip So I Smashed His Head Instead Chapter 13

After I left, Lucas didn’t drive away. He lit a cigarette. The smoke curled, blurring his face. His

expression was calm.

He suddenly remembered when he was five.

He was born out of wedlock. That year, his mother took him to the Reed house. She took a hundred

thousand dollars and left without looking back.

It was his birthday. But no one remembered. Or no one cared.

He squatted in the Backyard patio.

He molded a cake shape out of dirt.

He found five sticks and stuck them in.

He closed his eyes and made a wish.

When he opened them, he met a pair of beautiful, bright eyes.

It was the first time he saw Serena Sterling.

She was beautiful, and arrogant.

She looked at the dirt cake with utter disgust, her face scrunching up. “So ugly,” she said. Then she

kicked it apart.

After that, she got angry. Angry that the dirt had messed up her shoes.

Lucas looked up and watched silently as she complained. When she was done, she grabbed his hand and pulled him into the front hall.

The adults were chatting. The voices stopped when they saw him.

Mr. Reed frowned. Mrs. Reed looked cold.

Serena didn’t seem to notice. “Uncle Reed,” she said, “do you have cake?

I want a pretty one. A strawberry cake.”

The Reeds didn’t. But Mr. Reed had the housekeeper make one.

Two hours later.

A fresh strawberry cake came out.

Serena acted like she owned the place, digging out some candles.

She tilted her head and looked at Lucas. “How old are you?”

Lucas stayed silent.

She frowned, unhappy, and he whispered, “Five.”

Serena put five candles on the cake.

Then she called the adults over.

Only then did the Reed family realize it was Lucas’s birthday. Their expressions shifted. Serena didn’t notice. She sang “Happy Birthday” by herself.

Not wanting to spoil the mood, the adults hummed along.

When she finished, Serena poked Lucas, excited. “Make a wish! Then blow out the candles!”

Lucas didn’t make a wish. He blew them out directly.

Serena pursed her lips, annoyed. But she brightened quickly. Suddenly, she raised a hand and sprinkled something over his head-

colorful confetti. He had no idea where she’d dug that up.

Serena’s eyes curved with a smile. “Happy birthday!” In the fluttering confetti, Lucas saw that face.

Bright as the sun.
