“Once the footage is fully restored, we’ll know exactly what happened. No one will be wrongly

accused.”

Cole seemed to relax.

He gently rubbed Grace’s head.

“Don’t worry, Grace. I’m here. No one’s going to blame you for something you didn’t do.”

“Once this is cleared up, I’ll have Luna come back and apologize to you.”

He didn’t notice the way Grace’s eyes flickered downward-

a flash of guilt she quickly hid.

The day after I left Chicago, Cole showed up at the hospital early in the morning.

“Luna, the report should be out soon.”

He stood at the door for a long time before finally knocking.

“I know you probably didn’t mean for any of this to happen. But we can’t just leave you on your

own.” He sighed.

“If you just apologize to Grace, we’ll figure out how to help you.”

A passing nurse gave him a strange look.

“The patient in this room-Ms. Hayes-was discharged yesterday.”

“It’s sad, really. No one came to see her.”

“Second-degree burns on her arms and neck. Quite serious.”

Cole froze.

He realized then that Grace had only needed a bandage.

But Luna had been burned badly.

And Grace had told him she hadn’t seen Luna in the fire.

If he’d looked just a little harder, would she have been hurt less?

Would he have said all those cruel things to her in the hospital?

His hands clenched.

A bitter ache settled in his chest.

He stood at the door and typed out a message, deleting and rewriting it again and again.

“Luna, I was out of line that day. Come back. I’ll handle things at the institute.”

“Just admit you made a mistake-take some responsibility-and we’ll move on.”

“I heard you quit. Don’t worry. I’ll help you find something else. I’ll talk to Grace too.”

He sent it.

No reply.

A day passed. Nothing.

Phone, text, every app-all silent.

Two days later, Cole and Grace got the news.

Their viral TikTok fame had landed them a spot on a popular reality show.

The institute’s golden duo, finally getting the recognition they deserved.

For the first time in a while, they let themselves relax.

That night, at home, Cole said casually, “Grace, go pack your things.”

She started toward her room, then came back.

“Wait-the suitcase? Luna always packed for me.”

“I don’t know what to bring.”

Cole froze. Something hit him hard.

He realized then that he’d never packed his own bag.

Not once.

Asperger’s made even simple organization difficult.

Luna had always done it-neatly, carefully, with a smile.

She’d remind him where everything was.

He walked to the kitchen.

The kettle was empty. The dishes in the sink were starting to smell.

He stood there, not moving.
