When I got home from work, Sebastian was already there.

He was waiting for me by the door.

“Rhea, give me your hand.”

A red cord slipped around my wrist.

On it hung a gold bead the size of a grain of rice.

“I couldn’t buy you a big bracelet, so use this for now.”

“It looks small, but it was expensive. It cost half a month of my living expenses.”

“But if you like it, that’s all that matters.”

The warm light fell across his face, his eyes soft and his tone sincere.

In the past, I would have been overjoyed and aching for him.

But now I stared at the red cord with no expression.

I knew it was just a freebie.

A promotional gift the store had thrown in when he bought $660,000 worth of gold for Charlotte.

I raised my hand and took the red cord off.

Sebastian blinked, his voice still gentle.

“What’s wrong? Too embarrassed to accept it?”

“Aren’t you working a side job to buy me a suit? Gifts are supposed to go both ways.”

Earlier, Sebastian had told me he had never worn a suit.

I wanted to have one custom-made for him as a birthday gift.

I didn’t have several thousand dollars on hand, so I picked up a side job at the mall.

As he spoke, he wrapped his arms around me from behind.

His familiar scent was mixed with a sharp chypre perfume.

It was the one Charlotte always wore.

That smell had haunted me for an entire year of high school.

Just catching a whiff of it made me nauseous.

I turned my head, avoiding the kiss he was about to press on me.

Seeing this, Sebastian lowered his head and sniffed his collar without changing expression.

“A girl in the elevator was wearing perfume. It must have rubbed off on me.”

“I’ll go rinse off.”

He picked up the $20 pajama set and went into the bathroom.

I quietly went to the study and opened the computer.
