My boss watched the whole thing go off the rails and lit into me in front of everyone. “Sage Reed, you just

got promoted and you’re already trying to torch the place? Who the hell signed off on those questions?”

“Do you have any idea Mr. West threw five million dollars at this station just to make this interview happen?”

He kept shooting me desperate looks, mouthing at me to apologize. Cecilia’s voice oozed triumph. “Sage, we’re still family. If you just admit you were jealous and spread those lies on purpose, then me, my parents, and my husband will all forgive you.”

I looked straight at Gavin. “Mr. West, do you want me to apologize?”

His expression was a mess of conflict. He opened his mouth, but something seemed jammed in his throat. I

could read him perfectly. He wanted me to play along now so he could explain later.

Whether it meant groveling or admitting fault, he’d let me decide his punishment afterward. That was his

playbook. It was just like when we were fighting the West family old guard-I’d take the hits for him, and he’d

cry and swear he’d spend the rest of his life making it up to me.

Seeing me still silent, Gavin suddenly grabbed my arm. His voice dropped to a desperate whisper. “Sage, just

this once. This is the last time.”

I laughed, raised my voice, and pressed a hand to my chest like I was accepting an award I never wanted. “I’m

so sorry, Gavin. I was jealous, okay? Cecilia has the perfect parents who adore her. And now she has you. I

wish you all nothing but happiness. The three of you-and her, of course. May you never, ever be apart.”

In a flash, Gavin’s face went corpse-white. He reached for me, but Cecilia locked her fingers with his and put

on her best loved-up show.

I turned and walked away. My mom tried to follow me, but Cecilia blocked her, her voice turning syrupy

sweet. “Mom, fix my makeup, would you? See, this is why I love you. You always give me the best of

everything.”

She shot me a glance, then turned back to Miriam with a pout. “Too bad Sage never got any of that. Guess

that’s why she’s so bitter all the time.”

My steps hesitated for a beat. Gavin took a step toward me, but Dad blocked his path. “Gavin, forget about

that ungrateful brat. She’s been a pain in the ass since she could walk. God knows where she gets it from.”

“Come on, let’s focus on what matters-Cecilia’s future. Which talk show do you think is big enough for the

CEO’s wife?”
