The smile died on Audrey’s face. Color flooded her cheeks and her voice went sharp.

“Who do you think you are, Chloe? Ranking people in this little vanity project you call a shop? You’d be nothing without your family name!”

“Without your dad, do you really think Julian would’ve looked at you twice? Not with that mouth and definitely not with that brain.”

I nodded, perfectly serious.

“You know what? You’re absolutely right. If it weren’t for my dad, where would Julian be right

now?”

“So yeah – I bagged myself a rich, gorgeous husband and I have every right to be smug about it. You’d be smug too. Oh, wait.”

“I forgot. You wouldn’t know what that’s like.”

I gave Audrey the sweetest, most pitying look I had.

“Sorry if that hurt. But you said it yourself – I’m all mouth and no brain. So you’re not going to hold it against me, right?”

“You-” Audrey’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again. Not a word

came out.

I checked my watch.

“It’s almost nine. Don’t they dock your pay for being late? Maybe I should let Simon know.”

I pulled out my phone, nice and slowly.

Audrey’s eyes went glassy. “Don’t get too comfortable, Chloe.”

She turned on her heel and stormed out, leaving her dignity somewhere between the door and the

sidewalk.

watched her go. The second she was out of sight, the mask dropped. My hands were shaking. I grabbed my phone and started typing a message to Julian.

If he wasn’t going to divorce me, then why was he still letting his secretary waltz in here and humiliate me on my own turf? Had everything these past few weeks – the ring, the apron, the way

But before I could hit send, new comments flashed across my vision. My phone slipped out of my

hand and clattered to the floor.
