Dr. Lane’s composure didn’t last long.

That afternoon, the police retrieved the original surveillance footage from the resuscitation room.

The so-called “resuscitation” was nothing but a deceased infant covered with a blanket being pushed inside

and then pushed back out.

There had been no continuous resuscitation attempts.

No record of intubation.

The resuscitation time displayed in the system had been added afterward.

The surveillance footage along the neonatal transfer route had been deliberately cut for twelve minutes.

But the access records remained.

Dr. Lane’s badge had been used to enter and exit the area twice.

Ethan’s personal assistant had entered once.

Outside Evelyn’s room, the head nurse had pushed a neonatal transport incubator inside.

Fifteen minutes later, Evelyn signed the transfer agreement.

The witness was Ethan.

Every piece of evidence pointed directly at them.

Even before Evelyn was taken away, she was still crying.

She looked at Ethan.

“You promised you’d protect me.”

Ethan didn’t look at her.

His eyes stayed on the daughter in my arms.

My mother stepped in front of me.

“Mr. Caldwell, if you look at my daughter again, I’ll have my attorney file an additional request for a

restraining order against you.”

His face turned pale.

“Clara, we need to talk.”

I looked at him. “Talk to my lawyer”

“I’m her father.”

“Then prove you deserve to be called her father.”

Pain flashed across his eyes.

“I know I was wrong. But Evelyn was really falling apart back then. After she found out the baby had already

died in the womb, she kept saying she didn’t want to live. I was afraid something would happen to her.”

I stared at him.

Suddenly, everything felt ridiculous.

“She didn’t want to live, so you made me believe my daughter was dead?”

“She was breaking down, so you destroyed me instead?”

His eyes turned red. “I never wanted to destroy you.”

“But you did.”

My voice was cold.

“And you did it like you’d rehearsed it.”

His body stiffened.

I continued,

“The timing of my bleeding. The moment they needed signatures. The records from the resuscitation room.

The transfer vehicle.”

“Which part of this wasn’t arranged beforehand?”

He fell silent.

That silence was an admission.

Detective Foster recovered the deleted messages from his assistant’s phone.

“Once Ms. Whitmore starts bleeding, proceed according to the plan.”

“Move the baby to Ms. Hart’s room first. Deliver the death notification ten minutes later.”

“Keep The Whitmore Family occupied. Don’t let the matriarch leave with the baby.”

And there was one message Ethan had sent to Dr. Lane.

“If she reacts too strongly after waking up, conduct a psychiatric evaluation first.”

When I saw those words, my fingers went cold.

He had even accounted for the possibility that I wouldn’t believe him.

This wasn’t something he could have come up with at the last second.

Every possible reaction I might have had…

He had already prepared a response.

My mother placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Clara, don’t look at this anymore.”

I handed the phone back to Detective Foster.

“Preserve everything as evidence.”

That night, the top floor of St. Claire Medical Center was closed to new admissions.

The hospital executives arrived with their lawyers, intending to apologize.

But members of The Whitmore Family stopped them at the entrance.

My mother only said one thing.

“Take your apology to the media. The evidence belongs with the police.”

My daughter was transferred to another hospital for further examinations.

The entire way there, I held her in my arms and refused to let anyone touch her.

Maple lay in the back seat of the car, his nose pressed against the blanket.

He finally stopped barking.

He had found the person he was searching for.

I lowered my head and looked at my daughter.

She was asleep, her tiny fingers gently curled.

I pressed my face close to her ear.

Her fragrance was still there.
