Rebecca had been so sure Gavin would choose her.

But when she heard the finality in his voice, every expression on her face froze solid.

She screamed at him that day. Demanded answers. Hurled accusations.

He ignored all of it. His bodyguards took Rebecca into custody.

She wasn’t getting out until Samantha was found.

But days passed.

Gavin heard nothing.

Even the search and rescue team started trying to talk him down.

“Mr. Nelson, we understand how you feel, but searching for one person in open water like this-it’s

a needle in a haystack.”

“It’s been two weeks. Even if we find her at this point, she’s almost certainly-”

The words knocked the last bit of strength out of him.

He didn’t understand it. He’d already accepted that Samantha had jumped.

But now that the reality was staring him in the face, he couldn’t bring himself to believe it.

The pain in his chest was suffocating.

So bad he could barely breathe.

Rebecca begged to see him every day.

At first she played the lovesick card, saying she missed him. Eventually she dropped the act

entirely.

She screamed that Samantha’s death was his fault.

Gavin tuned it all out.

Alive or dead, he needed a body.

Until he saw Samantha’s corpse with his own eyes, he would not accept that she was gone.

Besides, her parents’ remains were still here.

If she was alive, she’d come back for them.

Gavin deployed even more people.

The other Families turned it into a joke-the great Gavin Nelson, dragging the ocean for two weeks

over a woman.

“Boss, should we start packing up Miss Carter’s… belongings?”

Luca had almost said remains. But one look at the hollow void in Gavin’s eyes made him change

course.

Gavin didn’t refuse.

He started going through the memories he’d shared with Samantha.

In her studio, he found it-the suit she’d designed for him by hand.

The memory hit him all at once, dragging him back five years.

He’d saved Samantha. Stayed with her through the worst of it.

And she’d told him, right then, that one day she would design the most perfect suit in the world for

him.

She’d done it. It was beautiful.

Gavin stood alone in the middle of the studio, staring at that suit for a long time.

Until moonlight spilled through the windows.

Then his knees gave out, and he wept.

If that day–or any day before it-he’d let Rebecca go…

Would he already be wearing this suit?

“I’m sorry, Samantha… Just come back. Come back and I’ll do anything.”

“Don’t die. Please don’t leave me…”

It wasn’t until he’d lost her that he finally understood.

What he felt for Samantha was never just guilt. Never just making amends.

Rebecca had been an obsession-an inability to accept that she’d left.

But Samantha? He and Samantha had been one step away from happiness.

The days that followed were a blur. He even thought about following Samantha into the ocean.

But he couldn’t. Not until her death was confirmed.

She was still alive. She had to be.

Gavin sent Rebecca back overseas.

Before she left, she screamed at him, demanding to know why.

“We can’t go back. You were right about one thing-the person I love is Samantha.”

“Once you’re overseas, don’t even think about coming back. You know what I’m capable of.”

The day after Rebecca was gone, Gavin’s phone rang.

Someone had found Samantha.

“Is this Mr. Nelson? We’ve located your wife, but she’s still unconscious. You’ll need to come identify her.”

“About the five-million-dollar reward…”

I was alive.

When I opened my eyes again, three months had passed.
