Police cars and an ambulance arrived, and the thugs immediately scattered.

Ava held Matteo in her arms, her hands covered in blood.

His face was deathly pale, and his breathing grew weaker by the second.

Ava grabbed one of the officers.

“Save him!”

The ambulance rushed him to the hospital.

Matteo was taken into surgery and remained unconscious.

The police first drove Ava home so she could change into clean clothes.

Afterward, she went to the station to give her statement.

The moment she stepped outside, someone pulled her into a tight embrace.

His body carried the chill of the night wind and the faint scent of cedar.

Rafael asked anxiously, “Are you hurt?”

Ava buried herself in his arms and finally broke down./

“Matteo… He tried to save me…”

“There was so much blood…”

She couldn’t finish a single sentence.

Tears kept falling, soaking Rafael’s clothes.

Rafael held her tightly and murmured, “It’s over. You’re safe now…”

He looked down at her, his voice hoarse.

“I shouldn’t have left. I should’ve stayed with you…”

She fell asleep shortly after getting into his car.

Rafael watched her for a long time.

He carefully carried her from the car and took her upstairs.

Ava’s parents were surprised to see Rafael, but they quickly invited him inside.

Rafael carried her to her room, removed her shoes and socks, and carefully tucked the blanket around her.

Then he quietly left.

The next day, Ava went to the hospital and sat beside Matteo’s bed.

His phone was filled with missed calls.

Ava paused, then entered her birthday.

The password hadn’t changed.

His lock screen was still a picture of her.

Ava held the phone for a moment before messaging his assistant and explaining what had happened.

Matteo remained unconscious all day.

When he finally woke, Ava was resting her chin on one hand, half asleep.

He thought he was still dreaming.

Only when Ava opened her eyes and looked at him with calm indifference did he realize it was real.

Ava stood and called for the doctor.

When he saw her preparing to leave, Matteo called out hoarsely.

“Ava…”

Ava stopped.

“I notified your assistant. He should be here soon.”

After several seconds, she turned and looked at him seriously.

“Matteo, I don’t hate you anymore.”

Matteo clenched his fingers and closed his eyes, unwilling to hear what came next.

“But I don’t love you anymore either.”

“Let’s set each other free.”

Matteo didn’t open his eyes until Ava was gone.

He stared at the ceiling as tears slid into his hair.
