Ava’s Australian residency application would take some time to be approved, so she decided to deal with her assets in New York first.

Her parents had moved to Melbourne years ago and worked as professors at a local university.

Had she not married Matteo, she would have left with them long ago.

During all the years they had been married, Matteo had never hesitated to spend money on her.

Holding the share transfer agreement, he had smiled at her calmly, as though the shares weren’t worth a fortune.

“It’s only a small stake. Everything I own is yours, so don’t turn it down.”

Back then, Ava had never once doubted Matteo’s love.

It wasn’t until now that Ava discovered Matteo had made a will leaving his entire estate to Luca Moretti, the son he shared with Mia.

Ava looked at the share transfer agreement in her hand and gave a cold laugh before tossing it into her jewelry box.

She turned to the private attorney beside her.

“Sell all of it and convert everything into cash. Do it as quickly as possible.”

Her attorney soon sold everything, including her shares in Moretti Holdings.

The money had barely reached her account when Matteo came looking for her.

The moment he entered, Matteo seized her wrist and demanded coldly, “Why did you sell your shares in Moretti Holdings? Are you planning to leave me?”

Ava tore her hand free.

Before she could answer, Matteo cut her off.

“I’m never letting you leave me again. Don’t even think about it!”

Ava let out a cold laugh.

“I thought you were exhausted.”

Matteo paused, some of the anger fading from his face.

“So that’s why you sold the shares?”

He forced down his temper.

“I’m tired, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love you.”

Ava felt sick.

He claimed to love her, yet he had cheated on her again and again.

He had even fathered a child with another woman.

He didn’t deserve to call what he felt love.

“As for Luca…”

Matteo hesitated before continuing.

“I’ve already announced publicly that he’s your son. The Moretti family will formally recognize him as yours.”

Ava froze.

“Absolutely not!”

She had just lost her own baby.

Why should she raise another woman’s child?

Matteo’s expression darkened.

“Ava, Luca needs to be formally recognized by the family. You don’t have any children, so why are you refusing?”

His voice turned into a cold command.

“We’re holding a formal dinner tomorrow to recognize Luca as the heir. You will attend. Otherwise, I’ll have someone bring you there.”

Ava’s face went pale.

Matteo exhaled slowly.

“Ava, I’ve already treated you well enough. You have no idea how much Mia is suffering now that Luca has to recognize you as his mother.”

His gaze fell on her bare ring finger, and he frowned.

“Where’s your wedding ring?”

Ava lowered her eyes.

“I threw it away.”

Matteo’s face hardened.

He reached out and gripped her chin.

“Ava Collins, I’m not divorcing you. You’re not leaving me either. I mean it.”

Only after the door had shut completely did Ava crouch down.

Her entire body trembled uncontrollably.

She pressed a hand against her lower abdomen, and it took a long time before she could breathe normally again.

Matteo was fiercely controlling, and the Moretti family’s power reached into every corner of the city.

If he refused to let her go, she would never be able to escape.

Ava smiled coldly.

But Matteo didn’t know that the marriage license they had used when they remarried was invalid.

The City Clerk had never registered their marriage.

It was the escape route Ava had left for herself.
