My Deskmate A Movie King Faked Cancer For Cash Chapter 04

We had a private booth all to ourselves.

Julian pulled off his mask, revealing the face that entertainment magazines had just voted the number one most desirable star of the year.

I stared at the menu, my chest tight with a chaotic pulse.

“Not going to order?” he teased. “Are you planning to just look at me instead?”

My face flushed instantly.

“You… you’re still—”

“Still what?”

I managed to mumble, “Still such a flirt.”

He let out a low laugh and tapped his finger on the menu:

“We’ll do the tomato bisque, a grilled cheese, the Caesar salad, and—”

He looked up, locking his eyes with mine.

“Warm apple pie. I remember you used to love that, and they make it great here.”

I froze. After all these years, he still remembered every single detail.

The booth fell quiet for a moment.

Julian set down his glass and spoke softly:

“If you hadn’t had my back in high school, I probably wouldn’t have made it this far.”

I looked up, confused.

He leaned back with a lazy shrug. “On graduation day, you lent me fifty dollars.”

The memory rushed back.

On the day of our high school graduation, Julian had gotten a last-minute call for an audition. His mother had strongly opposed it and cut off his cards.

He had blocked me at the back door of the school, leaning down slightly to look at me. “Hey, partner. Can you spare fifty bucks for a bus ticket? I’m completely cut off.”

Without a second thought, I had reached into the hidden pocket of my backpack and pulled out a crumpled wad of small bills.

Julian had stared at the messy cash, stunned:

“Is this all you—”

“No, I have more,” I lied, cutting him off and shoving the money into his hand.

He didn’t ask further. He grabbed his bag, waved the cash with a brilliant, reckless grin, and said:

“Alright, I’ve got a bus to catch. Next time we meet, I’ll pay you back five million.”

That night, I worked a brutal late shift washing dishes at a local diner until my hands were raw and pale.

But all I could think about was his parting smile.

I washed dishes for four hours and made forty dollars.

“So, I’m here to keep my promise.” Julian smiled, tapping a few times on his phone.

My screen lit up with a loud chime.

A bank notification popped up: $5,000,000.00 had been deposited into my account.
