Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 03

Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 03

My thoughts were interrupted by a round of applause. I looked up again.

Not far away, Evan had already helped Sophie onto the stage. His palm rested lightly behind her back—a gesture so considerate and natural, as if he’d done it countless times.

Sophie tilted her head and smiled sweetly at him. Evan seemed affected by her smile too, the corners of his lips lifting slightly as a faint trace of tenderness appeared in his dark eyes.

They stood side by side—one cool, one radiant. A perfect match.

No wonder they were the fated leads.

My mind went blank. I just stared, frozen.

Then Sophie suddenly turned her head. Her gaze landed directly on me. After a few seconds, she hooked her fingers affectionately around Evan’s cuff and raised her eyebrows slightly at me.

Evan took the microphone from his assistant. His calm, cool voice carried through the speakers:

“I’m Evan Chase. This is my fiancée, Sophie Newman. Seven years ago, I had nothing. Sophie came to me without a second thought. She even hurt herself saving me—the scar on her wrist is still there.”

Saving him. The scar on her wrist.

I looked down and yanked my sleeve, covering the scar on my own wrist.

Seven years ago, I was working a summer job at a barbecue place. The SYSTEM found me while my delivery was about to run late—I was practically flying on that scooter.

When I didn’t respond, the SYSTEM asked: “Do you want to save Mash?”

I paused. Mash was the stray cat I’d found when I was ten. The people in my alley used to joke that we were both strays—a parentless kid and a parentless kitten.

But I didn’t see it that way. I was a stray kid no one wanted. My cat wasn’t.

And I knew that in Mash’s eyes, he was a kitty no one wanted, but I wasn’t someone without a kitty who wanted me. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have hung on through all that pain, refusing to close his eyes even when he barely had the strength to eat.

Cats can’t talk. But cats knew when people were afraid of being alone. So they wanted to stay with them. One more second counted as one more second.

The SYSTEM said it would cure Mash’s terminal illness. In return, I had to go to a young man—the male lead of this world, Evan Chase.

He had completely deviated from the original storyline, filled with rage and determined to die, causing the entire plot to collapse. My mission was just to keep him alive.

So when Evan once again pressed a fruit knife against his wrist, I appeared out of nowhere and fell right in front of him, completely disrupting his plan to destroy himself.

Seven years later, the long scar on my wrist began aching faintly again. I sighed and rubbed it with my cold fingertips, trying to ease the strange pain.
