Training someone was genuinely the most satisfying thing I’d ever done.

Practice scores came out. Orion was still about three hundred points behind me, but he’d crushed his

previous best by a mile.

I was ecstatic. I treated him to ice cream and grandly announced he could have one wish. Anything I could

grant.

“Anything?” Orion asked.

“Anything.” I nodded. “As long as it’s within my power.”

He looked down and smiled. The tips of his ears went pink. “You can definitely do it. But I’ll save it. For later.”

“Fine by me.”

I was in an excellent mood. Striding ahead. Feeling great.

Out of nowhere, a guy with bleached hair popped up in front of Orion.

“Bro! Why are you smiling like that? You look so whipped.”

The guy clearly hadn’t seen me ahead of them. His attention was entirely on Orion.

“That Roots-guy you asked me to track down? I found him. But…”

Orion moved fast. One hand clamped over the guy’s mouth. The other yanked his head around. Straight

toward me.

The guy froze. His eyes went wide. “You’re. You’re the girl who slapped my bro at the school gate.”

Then his face lit up with sudden revelation. “Ohhh. You’re her. Bro’s girl. Hey I-”

Orion’s hand clamped over his mouth again. “My cousin. Distant cousin. Rusty.”

I’d never seen Orion look embarrassed before. He tapped Rusty’s head. “He’s. He’s not right. In the head.”

Rusty made muffled noises of protest.

“I need to take him to get his brain checked. Get home safe, okay?”

Then Orion hauled him away by the neck. Fleeing.

I stood there. Ice cream forgotten.

Three minutes later, I made the boldest decision of my life.

I followed him.
