He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 07

Chaos erupted inside the ward. Footsteps echoed everywhere.

“Her blood pressure’s dropping!”

“Act fast!”

“Get two large-bore IVs! Type and cross!”

The chaos faded into a distant hum as darkness pulled me under.

When I woke again, dusk had fallen. The ward was empty save for me. A fierce argument drifted in from

outside the door.

“This is what you call proper care?”

It was my best friend’s voice. I had never heard her this furious.

“She nearly went into hemorrhagic shock! What if I hadn’t found her in time?”

“Is this how military family members get treated by your nursing staff?”

A short silence followed, then Ava’s voice trembled through tears. “I’m so sorry… I truly thought it was normal post-op discomfort… It’s a common complaint. I followed standard protocol. It wasn’t intentional.”

My friend’s voice cracked with fury. “Not intentional? Does ‘not intentional’ erase everything? She almost

died!”

Just then, a familiar voice cut through the noise. “That’s enough.”

My breath caught.

Joseph.

“Dr. York…” Ava sounded relieved, as if she’d finally found someone to lean on, her sobs growing louder. “I swear I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

Joseph murmured in a soothing tone. “Don’t be afraid. I’ll handle this.”

My friend let out a bitter laugh. “Handle it? What exactly are you planning to do? She nearly killed someone!”

Joseph’s tone turned stern. “Ava is an exemplary nurse with a flawless record. She followed standard observation protocols. There is no evidence of professional negligence, and I trust her clinical judgment.”

My friend’s voice warped with anger. “Joseph! Do you have any idea who that woman lying in that room is?!”

Joseph fell quiet for a moment, his tone still icy and composed. “You are Camilla’s friend. But I cannot bend the rules and show favoritism for your family because of that connection.”

My friend gasped for air, too incensed to speak another word. Joseph escorted Ava away, their footsteps fading down the hall.

Whispers surfaced soon afterward.

“Dr. York really looks out for Nurse Ava; he defended her the entire time.”

“If I were Ava, I’d devote myself to him.”

“They make such a perfect pair-the theater’s top surgeon and head nurse. I’m so envious.”

Each whisper landed like a blow.

The ward door pushed open, and my friend walked in with red-rimmed eyes.

When she saw I was awake, she panicked at once and hurried to cover my ears. “Don’t listen. None of it is

true.”

I gently pulled her hands away, my expression calm. “It’s fine. I’ve already let it all go.

I’d brushed with death. There was nothing left to cling to.

Three days later, I had recovered enough to check out of the hospital and head home to collect my luggage.

I froze the instant I pushed open the front door.

Joseph was home. Our eyes met, and silence hung thick in the air for a beat.

He spoke first. “You’re back.”

I said nothing, walking straight toward the bedroom to open the cabinet and check my documents.

Joseph’s voice came from behind me.

“You’ve always wanted to drive the Beartooth Highway, haven’t you? We can go look at SUVS tomorrow.

When I get my next leave, I’ll take you.”

Once, those words would have been enough to keep me awake all night with joy.

Now, it was far too late.
