He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 08

I replied flatly. “There’s no need.”

Joseph frowned. “Why not?”

“No particular reason.” My tone remained impassive.

Seeing I refused to budge, his patience finally snapped. “Aya has been telling me to treat you better, and this

is how you respond?”

A dry laugh slipped out. “Since when do you need her permission to be decent to your wife?”

Joseph’s face turned livid. “Camilla! How can you speak like this now?”

I kept sorting my paperwork, not bothering to glance in his direction.

Joseph stood frozen, his jaw tight.

After a long pause, he let out a cold scoff. “Very well. It seems we both need time apart to think. I’ll stay on base these two days. Use the time to get some perspective.”

He grabbed his patrol cap and stormed out, slamming the door hard. I never lifted my head once during the

entire exchange.

Only after the front door slammed shut did I slowly walk to the bedside. I pulled two stacks of papers from

my bag.

The first was the fully signed divorce agreement. The second held the hospital records for my termination procedure. Tucked alongside them was the ultrasound photo that no longer held any meaning.

I laid everything neatly on the nightstand, then dragged my luggage out of the house.

In the rearview mirror, I spotted Joseph’s military truck driving in the opposite direction.

I didn’t look back. A brand-new life stretched out ahead of me.

After five years, I had finally found myself again.

That evening, Joseph stepped out of a flower shop clutching a bouquet. A vehicle key was hidden at its

center.

He wondered if he was being too indulgent, but the thought of her surprised, grateful smile made the gesture worth it.

He pushed open the front door and called softly. “Camilla?”

The house was eerily quiet, completely devoid of warmth.

He frowned and pulled open the partition to the gear storage room. All the outdoor equipment Camilla had carefully curated over five years was gone.

Moving to the walk-in closet, he found every trace of her erased. It was as if she had never existed in his life.

His peripheral vision caught the documents stacked neatly on the nightstand, and his heart lurched. He

strode over.

The bold header stared back at him: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

A buzzing fog enveloped his mind.

Just then, another sheet slipped out from underneath the paperwork. Joseph bent down and picked it up. The ground seemed to drop beneath his feet.

It was an early-pregnancy ultrasound scan. Estimated Gestational Age: 3 Weeks.

His breathing turned ragged.

Camilla had been pregnant? When? Why had no one told him?

Countless chaotic thoughts raced through his mind. Before he could process anything, the final document

came into view.

The operative report for the termination.

The whole world seemed to fall silent. Joseph stared rigidly at the typed lines, his vision blurring as heat

rose behind his eyes.

Their child was gone.
