He Divorced Me Six Years Ago Without Me Knowing Chapter 04

Sophia’s pupils shrank. Almost on instinct, she stood up to block her grandmother’s view.

But it was already too late.

Her grandmother had still seen Claire, and her face fell at once.

“Julian, why did you bring another woman here?”

Her voice went sharp with panic. Then she suddenly propped herself up, trying to get out of bed.

In her panic, she knocked over the glass of water on the bedside table.

At the sound, Sophia quickly turned back and steadied her grandmother.

Claire stood in the doorway. Her eyes shifted slightly, and then she put on a considerate expression as she tugged at Julian’s sleeve. “Honey, handle this quickly. Don’t miss our son’s parent-teacher conference. I’ll wait outside.”

Julian patted her hand approvingly.

Then he walked to the bedside and respectfully called out, “Grandma.”

“Julian, what exactly is going on between you and Sophia? Why are so many people calling her a mistress?”

Her grandmother stared hard at him. “And who was that woman just now? Why… why did she call you honey?”

Julian fell silent.

The air in the room seemed to have been sucked dry, pressing down so heavily that no one could breathe.

When her grandmother saw that he still would not speak, her face grew paler and paler, and her breathing became more and more rapid.

Sophia stepped forward and patted her back. At last, she could not hold back anymore. “Julian, are you still refusing to tell the truth?”

She stared straight into Julian’s eyes and spoke through gritted teeth. “You know exactly how deeply what happened to my mother scarred Grandma. Are you trying to upset her to death?”

Something flickered in Julian’s eyes.

Of course he knew. Back then, Sophia’s mother had been tricked into becoming the other woman.

Later, the legal wife showed up at her door with a group of people, and Sophia’s mother, Mrs. Bennett Sr., unable to endure the humiliation, jumped to her death.

Sophia had only been eight years old that year.

From then on, her grandmother had guarded fiercely against any man who appeared around Sophia, afraid that she would repeat her mother’s tragedy.

When Julian pursued Sophia, he had also gone through layer after layer of her grandmother’s tests.

He had once sworn over and over in front of her grandmother that he would treat Sophia well for the rest of his life and never deceive her.

But now…

Sophia’s gaze fell on Claire, who was standing outside the door with her head lowered, playing on her phone. It felt as if someone had torn a fresh wound straight through her heart.

Julian also seemed to be touched by that memory. He slowly reached out and placed his hand over her grandmother’s, his voice low. “Grandma, this is a misunderstanding…”

But before he could finish, a burst of noisy footsteps suddenly came from outside the door.

Then several people carrying cameras filed into the room.

The man leading them looked excited. His gaze swept quickly around the hospital room before locking precisely onto Julian. “Judge Hayes, we’re the reporters Ms. Bennett invited.”

“We heard you just say there was a misunderstanding. Does that mean Ms. Bennett isn’t the mistress who came between you, and that childhood sweetheart of yours is?”

Julian’s face changed instantly.

He turned sharply toward Sophia, the corner of his mouth pulling into a cold curve. “Sophia, so this was your plan. I won’t let you get what you want.”

“Julian, how can you talk to Sophia like that?”

Her grandmother’s face was full of disbelief.

But Julian pulled his hand out of her grasp and said coldly, “Why should I show any kindness to someone trying to destroy my family?”

He strode to the door and shielded Claire, whose eyes were brimming with grievance, behind him. Then, in front of the room full of reporters, he turned back and said to the old woman in the bed, word by word, “Sophia may be my ex-wife, but that does not mean she can be the other woman trying to destroy my family. Please discipline your granddaughter and tell her to stop harassing me.”
