The Don’s Forgotten Wife Took Down His Empire Chapter 10

The Don’s Forgotten Wife Took Down His Empire Chapter 10

I cried, I fought.

But in the end, I just went numb, watching him bring one woman after another into our home.

I only stayed because I needed him to pay my mom’s sky-high medical bills every month.

But now, even that last thread holding me was gone.

I sighed. “Damian, I’m grateful that the Moretti family gave my father a job all those years ago, so

he could support my mom and me.

“But later, my dad died saving your dad. And my mom got in that car accident saving your life.

“All these years, when you said you hated me working outside the home, I quit my job and my

career,

“But I’ve been sick of this life for a long, long time.

“What my family owed yours, we already paid back in full. So you don’t have to bother me anymore,

from now on.”

Damian’s face went bone white, he couldn’t get a word out.

His lips trembled, and he was just about to speak when a sharp, girlish voice rang out behind him.

“Damian!”

Serena strode over in her high heels, pointed her finger right in my face, and her voice shot up an

octave. “I knew she was a slut! She already lined up her next guy behind your back, that’s why she

wants a divorce!

“Damian, look at me! Only I really love you!

“Get the fuck out of my way!”

Damian’s eyes were blood red, he shoved her hard to the ground.

“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re after with me! You go on and on about feeling bad for poor

people, but you spend more money on bullshit than anyone I know!

“You’re the most greedy, vain bitch that ever walked this earth!

“If it weren’t for you, Scarlett’s mother would still be alive!”

He reared back and slapped Serena so hard across the face.

Serena was stunned. Her face burned with the humiliation of being called out, and when she saw, there was no way to fix things, she stopped putting on an act.

“Damian, you think you’re some great catch? You’re not!

“You’ve been passed around by how many women? You’re fucking dirty. If I didn’t want your

money, do you think any woman would touch you?

“I fooled you so easily with a little act. You’re just a complete, fucking fool!”

That hit a raw nerve.

Damian flew into a rage, grabbed Serena by the collar, and slapped her over a dozen times in a row.

Her pretty, pale face swelled up almost instantly.

I had no time to watch these two scream at each other. I turned to Vincent.

“Let’s go. We have to meet other legislators soon.”

Taking down the Moretti family needed alliances with a lot of different people.

Damian jumped up immediately and grabbed my arm, begging desperately.

“I know I messed up, Scarlett. I only love you, I swear I’ll never touch another woman again. Just give me one more chance, please.”

Disgust churned in my chest, and I was just about to snap at him when Vincent pulled Damian’s

hand off me before I could move.

He smiled, casual and teasing.

“Moretti, I think the most important thing for you to worry about right now is your family

business.”

He pulled out his phone and pulled up a news article.

The bright red “BREAKING” banner on the screen burned like fire.

[BREAKING Moretti family indicted by FBI for money laundering and illegal gambling, federal

court freezes all assets!]

Damian ripped the phone out of his hand, his fingers scrolling frantically across the screen.

The plummeting stock graph was a dull knife, slowly carving into his knuckles, and all the color

drained from his face.

“This can’t be…” His throat tightened, and a few seconds later he glared at me.

“Scarlett. Was this you? Why would you do this?”

I admitted it without hesitation. “It was me.

“You killed my mom. I exposed all your dirty secrets. That’s fair.”

“Why! You are my wife! How could you help him!”

His eyes turned solid red, veins of blood creeping across the whites.

Vincent stepped forward in front of me, blocking Damian’s murderous, twisted glare.

“I’ll say this one more time. She has no connection to you anymore. If you don’t like it, go talk to the FBI-I’ll be waiting for you there.”

He laced his fingers through mine and walked away without looking back.

Damian tried to follow, but officers waiting outside blocked his path.

Behind him, Serena threw her head back and laughed mockingly. “Hahaha Damian! You got what you deserved! You never saw it coming, did you? You fell right into the hands of the woman you

loved!”

Damian’s phone kept blowing up with calls.

Messages flooded in from every direction, and he couldn’t hold it together anymore. His vision

went black, and he collapsed.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, I poured Vincent a glass of whiskey.

“Thank you for agreeing to work with me.’

Neon lights flickered outside the window, illuminating my face.

I didn’t look tired and lost anymore.

I remembered that day in the slums, when Vincent found me and took me away.

In the car, he showed that same playful smile. “Mrs. Moretti, I accept the deal you proposed.

“You give me all the Moretti family’s classified files, and I help you get your divorce. Sounds good?”

It looked like an unfair trade, but it was the only way I had to escape my cage.

I said yes without hesitation.

The Moretti family, the legendary head of New York’s underworld, couldn’t survive the storm after

all. They fell apart completely.

To get revenge, Damian used his last remaining connections to lock Serena up in a psychiatric

hospital.

After that, he came to see me all the time, begging me to remarry him.

Vincent asked me once, “Do you want me to get someone to take care of him for you?”

I shook my head. “No need. I’m leaving.”

He looked surprised. “You don’t plan to stay in New York anymore?”

“I want to travel,” I said.

“See mountains, see oceans, see the whole world.”

I got my mother’s phone back from the hospital, and found a video she’d recorded for me right

before she died.

In the video, her face was pale, but she forced a weak smile through the pain.

“Scarlett, Momma loves you.”

In her gnarled hand, she held a paper crane.

She used to fold them for me when I was little. She’d hold me in her lap and say, “My good girl is a

little bird. You’re not meant to be trapped in any cage. Go fly, as far as you want.”

Now, my own little bird had finally flown out of the cage.

From now on, no one would ever chain me down again.
