A few days later, Damian and I met again. To finalize the paperwork and transfer the hunters’ team to me.

We met at the edge of the forest under the old oak tree where it all began.

He’d lost weight. Dark circles shadowed his eyes. Stubble lined his jaw.

That once-striking werewolf face worn down by exhaustion now.

As soon as I finished signing, I turned to leave.

But he stopped me. He pulled out a moonstone pendant.

“This… was always meant for you.”

“I just never found the right time. And now… I guess there isn’t one.”

“Keep it. Toss it. It’s up to you.”

I said, my voice cold. “I don’t want it.”

He looked at me. His eyes were deep.

Too many emotions swirled inside me. Pain, regret, and a small flicker of hope that refused to die.

“Raven… I know everything I say now is wrong. Too late. But Vera and I-”

“I don’t want to hear it,” I cut him off. “What you have with her is none of my business.”

“Throw it all away. And don’t contact me again.” I turned to go.

“Raven! Can’t you just give me one more chance? At least hear me out?”

I looked back at him.

For a second, It almost felt laughable. And a little pathetic.

“Damian, there are some roads you can’t walk back. Some mistakes can’t be forgiven.”

“What we had ended the moment you chose to betray me.’

“Let’s keep this clean. For both of us.”

It was like something drained out of him.

He collapsed to his knees with his hands over his face and his shoulders slumped.

I could still feel the faint echo of our broken bond reaching me.

It sent a sharp twist through my chest. But I didn’t turn back. I kept walking.

Not far down the path, where the trees grew thicker, a figure lunged out from the brush and blocked my way.

It was Rod. He looked worse than before.

His eyes were bloodshot and fixed on me.

No, on the necklace at my throat, the one my grandmother left me.

“You little bitch. Thought I wouldn’t find you again?”

“This time, you’re not getting away that easy!”

I said, “I’m not giving you anything. You want money? Earn it.”

“Earn it?” He sneered. A spray of spit hit my face.

“You expect a rogue to work for a living? Let me show you how rogues earn their keep.”

He lunged. Grabbed for my necklace.

“Get off me!” I snapped. “Give me the money-or I’ll kill you!””

His face twisted. In his other hand was a silver dagger.

My breath caught. I tried to shout, but my throat closed up.

Just as the blade came down, a figure slammed into him from the side with full force.

It was Damian. He’d been following me.

Rod roared. Like a wild beast. He scrambled up and lunged again.

Damian stepped in front of me, shielding me.

They grappled. Struggled.

“Damian, watch out!” I shouted.

Damian raised his right arm to block. A dull sound followed as the blade sank into his arm.

Rod went still. He stared at the blood on his hand. At the knife buried deep in Damian’s forearm.

Panic flickered across his face.

He let go and stumbled back. Then bolted.

Blood poured from the wound. Too bright under the moonlight.

Damian swayed. Then looked up at me.

There was no pain in his expression. Only a strange calm.

“This time… I didn’t let him hurt you.”
