I instinctively lunged to grab it back.

“That’s my own money—I earned it from my summer job!”

“Give it back! That’s my tuition!”

Vanessa lifted her hand, holding the cash high out of reach.

“You think you can take back stolen money? Dream on!”

We were both struggling over it.

Then footsteps came from the hallway—Gideon.

“Ella, let’s talk.”

Before I could even respond,

Vanessa shoved the door open and hurled herself onto the shattered pieces of the piggy bank, blood everywhere.

She wailed in agony, “Sis, why did you push me?!”

I stared at Vanessa, lying on the shards and screaming, then looked at Gideon walking through the door.

My mind went completely blank.

Gideon practically lunged over, pinned down Vanessa’s bleeding wounds, and scooped her into his arms.

He looked back and shot me a glare.

In that instant, I saw pure hatred in Gideon’s eyes.

My parents rushed in at the noise, not even bothering to scold me. They followed Gideon, swarming around Vanessa as they rushed out.

I just stood there frozen.

Before I could even process what happened, my mother’s palm came flying at me, then my father’s fists and kicks.

They beat me as they screamed.

“Vanessa just went into your room to look around, and you did that to her? Do you even have a heart?”

“Not only a thief, but now a menace!”

“Get out! Go back to your backwater town! The Croft family has no daughter like you!”

I was beaten badly.

My whole body ached, and I didn’t even have the strength to stand.

Just as I was losing consciousness, a pair of shoes stopped in front of me.

Gideon reached down and helped me up.

He waved at my parents, his voice even sounding a little gentle.

“Auntie, Uncle, stop. Ella probably didn’t do it on purpose.”

“How about this—I’ll take her out for a drive and a chat. Talk it out, and maybe things’ll settle down.”

I looked up at him with gratitude, wanting to thank him for saving me.

Wanting to tell him—I really didn’t push Vanessa.

But when I saw his eyes, I was terrified.

They were filled with bottomless, unfathomable disgust.

He hated me.

As Gideon led me out, we passed through the living room.

Vanessa was lying on the couch, having her wounds dressed by a private doctor.

She smiled smugly at me and waved.

Then she mouthed another word at me.

“Bye-bye, bitch.”

The sky was dark and heavy, like a storm was coming.

Gideon was driving terrifyingly fast. I clutched my seatbelt so hard, I couldn’t even get a word in to explain.

Finally, he pulled over on a desolate roadside, pitch black all around, and I had no idea where we were.

Gideon finally spoke to me.

“Ella, go grab something from the trunk.”

I obediently got out.

Raindrops started to fall, cold against my skin.

I’d just reached the back of the car.

Click.

A crisp sound.

The doors locking.

I whipped around.

Gideon rolled down his window, his face twisted with mockery and contempt.

“To be honest, when you broke off the engagement, I actually felt a little sorry for you.”

“But I didn’t think you could still play the victim like this—and then go straight for Vanessa the second we got back! Ella, you’re poison!”

“You want to act out? Reflect on it here!”

The next second, the car sped off with a roar.

A deafening crack of thunder, and the rain came pouring down in sheets.

I stood frozen in the rain.

It finally hit me what Vanessa’s “bye-bye” had meant.

I think I’ve been thrown away.
