Oops! My Billionaire Boss Fell for Five Versions of Me! Chapter 17

“Then what’s in that room?”

Nathaniel didn’t answer right away. Then he walked over to the door and opened it himself.

The lock clicked.

I froze.

Soft light filled the room. Every wall was covered with portraits. Of me.

Dozens of them.

Me at the burrito cart. Me pouring coffee. Me at my desk.

Me gazing off into the distance with the wind in my hair. Me holding a dog. Me scrunching my nose

at a cup of bubble tea.

And in the center, the largest one. Me, the day I’d first sat down at his uncle’s portrait stand.

That’s why he’d brought his uncle to the office. To prove what he’d already suspected.

That every woman he’d fallen for was the same one.

Something cracked open in my chest.

He was face-blind. So he sat in this room, day after day, staring at my face. Trying to memorize it.

So if I ever walked away, he’d still be able to find me.

Something anyone else could do without thinking was the hardest thing in the world for him.

I stepped back.

But Nathaniel was right behind me. He wasn’t letting me run this time.

His breath was unsteady.

“I’ve liked you from the beginning. From the first time I saw you.”

His ears went red the second the words left his mouth.

“Then why didn’t you say something?”

“I was afraid I’d scare you off.” He cleared his throat. “And afraid you’d quit.”

Then something shifted in his expression. Like he’d finally made a decision.

“Can I ask you something?”

“You push yourself so hard for money. Is it because… something’s going on? With your family?”

I shook my head. “No. I just really, really like money.”

“Does that make me shallow?”

He blinked. Then let out a breath like he’d been holding it for months.

“That’s perfect.”

“What?”

His voice turned dead serious. “I have a lot of money.”

So what? I liked money, but I wasn’t about to sell my dignity for it.

I shook my head. “I can’t be bought. Money I earn myself means more to me.”

Nathaniel paused, looking genuinely confused.

Then, without a word, he tugged his collar down. Just enough.

His voice dropped low. “What if I threw in… this?”

I swallowed hard. My brain stalled.

I fought to stand my ground. “I… I have principles…”

He leaned in. “You know, someday my mom might show up at your door with five million dollars

and ask you to leave me.”

My eyes went wide. “Five million dollars?!”

He watched me. “… Your eyes just lit up.”

I clutched my chest. “That’s emotion! I’m overwhelmed! This is what love feels like!”

Nathaniel laughed. Actually laughed. His hand found its way into my hair.

“Then let’s get engaged.”

I looked at him. Then I thought about the five million.

The man and the money. Together, they were impossible to resist.

What was the smartest thing an employee could do? Lock down the ultimate asset.

I nodded. “Okay. Let’s get engaged.”

Nathaniel smiled. Soft. Real. All the way to his eyes. “Okay.”
