The banquet finally ended. All I wanted was to go home.

I’d barely reached the door when cool fingers closed over my shoulder.

“Harper.”

There was something in his voice I’d never heard before. Hesitation.

I turned around. His face was completely serious.

“You…” He swallowed hard, looked away for a second, then squared his jaw.

“Would you be my girlfriend?”

My brain went blank.

His brows were drawn tight, jaw clenched like he was bracing for impact. The tips of his ears had

gone scarlet.

“It doesn’t mean… anything personal.”

He paused, voice dropping lower.

“The new investors care a lot about family values. If I look like I’m in a stable relationship, it helps

with the deal.”

The excuse was paper-thin.

And I bought it completely.

Oh! That actually made sense. Tonight’s mess with the board member must’ve made it obvious. Cycling through dates would make any business partner nervous.

So he needed a “girlfriend.” Another part-time gig. I could handle that.

I nodded. “Done.”

Nathaniel blinked like he hadn’t expected that. Then something bright broke across his face before

he could stop it.

His whole body relaxed at once. Mouth, shoulders, breath.

“Really?” Barely above a whisper.

“Of course.”

Work was work. I was his assistant. This was just another task on the list.

Nathaniel turned his face away, but I caught the tension leaving his frame. The corner of his mouth twitched up.

He fought it back, forcing his expression flat.

But I was already doing math.

“So… do I still get my regular salary on top of the girlfriend stipend?”

He froze, like that wasn’t the follow-up he’d pictured.

His mouth opened. Closed. Then he just sighed.

“Yes. Same as always.”
