Oops! My Billionaire Boss Fell for Five Versions of Me! Chapter 08

I wasn’t wrong, technically.

The job listing did say “must accompany the CEO to business functions and be on call 24/7.” The wording was vague enough to sound like a euphemism.

It scared most applicants off. Lucky me.

“Mr. Ashford, green cufflinks, white bow tie, that’s Mr. Vance. Gray suit, black socks, Mr. Cole. Striped shirt by the bar, Mr. Blake…”

I kept my voice low, feeding him details about every one of the forty-plus guests in the room.

Nathaniel sipped his wine and nodded. Then he walked into the crowd like he’d known every one of

them for years.

I kept my hand on his arm and my smile locked in place.

I had to give it to him. The man’s memory was terrifying. I’d fed him forty names and dossiers in

under two minutes, and he hadn’t missed a single one.

I was busy being Nathaniel’s walking cheat code.

Then a board member slid into my space. Oily smile, wine glass in hand, eyes crawling over me like

I was the menu.

“So this is Ashford’s latest? She’s cute, I guess. Outfit’s a little… understated, though.”

A few women nearby perked up, circling like they’d smelled blood.

“Ashford’s taste is… interesting.”

“New girl, new type, I guess. What is it this time, the wide-eyed little innocent?”

They piled on fast. I’d dealt with this type before. Rich mean girls with too much wine.

I kept my smile steady. “I’m here for work.”

The board member clicked his tongue, grin widening. “Work. Right. Everyone knows Ashford switches girlfriends faster than he signs quarterly reports.”

“So what kind of skills are we talking about, exactly?”

Laughter rippled through the cluster. The nasty, knowing kind.

I could take a joke. But not that one.

A hot flush of anger crept up my neck.

“How about you try thinking with the head on your shoulders before you open your mouth?”

The laughter stopped.

The board member’s smile curdled. He leaned in, voice dropping.

“Assistant. Sure. I’m just trying to figure out whether the work happens at your desk or in his bedroom.”

A few people gave ugly little snickers.

My chest locked up. My nails bit into my palms.

Then a voice cut in behind me. Ice-cold.

“Her eye for detail. And her memory.”

Nathaniel was right behind me. I hadn’t heard him approach. Each word landed like a verdict.

“Every guest in this room. Their backgrounds, their preferences, their projects. She briefed me on all forty of them. From memory.”

His gaze cut to the board member like a blade. “She’s worth ten of you.”

The room went dead silent.

Sweat beaded on the board member’s forehead. He raised his glass with a hand that wasn’t steady

anymore.

“Ashford, come on. It was just a joke.”

Nathaniel didn’t blink. “I’m not laughing.”

He looked at me then. Brief. Controlled. But absolute.

“No one questions her place. Not here. Not ever.”
