My Family Faked the Apocalypse and Watched Me Die Chapter 06

In the photograph, besides the old scars on my wrist, there was a fresh wound so deep that bone was visible.

No blood remained to flow from it.

A large crimson stain had spread beneath my body.

The autopsy report stated clearly:

Cause of death: Wrist laceration resulting in fatal blood loss.

Ryan and Ethan stood frozen. Neither of them spoke for a long time.

“How…how could she be dead? This has to be fake! The report must be forged!”

The officer had completely lost his patience.

“The body is in the morgue. You can see it for yourselves.”

Everyone except Chloe looked stricken with fear.

Ethan’s face was as white as paper. Ryan’s hands wouldn’t stop trembling.

Owen looked up helplessly. His small voice quivered.

“Mommy… mommy’s okay… right?”

No one answered him.

The doors of the morgue slowly opened. A wave of icy air rushed toward them.

The medical examiner pointed to the lowest drawer.

“Miss Bennett is here.”

Ryan stood in front of it. His hand rested on the handle. But he couldn’t bring himself to pull it open.

Instead, he turned toward the officer. His voice shook uncontrollably.

“Tell Evelyn… tell her to stop joking around.”

“I promise… I’ll never lie to her again. Please…”

The officer didn’t respond. He reached forward himself and pulled the drawer open.

A white sheet covered the body beneath. The figure underneath looked heartbreakingly thin.

Silence swallowed the room.

At last, Ethan slowly reached out.

With trembling hands, he peeled back the white sheet.

The moment my pale, stiff and lightly distorted face was revealed, Ryan collapsed onto the floor as though every bone in his body had vanished.

A broken sob escaped his lips

Owen’s tiny face turned ghostly white. He grabbed Ryan’s arm and burst into hysterical tears.

“Mommy…”

Ethan stood there like a man whose soul had been ripped away.

His lips trembled uncontrollably. His eyes were filled with panic.

“How… how could you be dead…”

An officer handed them an envelope. His expression was complicated as he looked at the three of them.

“This is the suicide note Miss Bennett left behind.”

It was as if someone had flipped a switch. Ryan, Ethan, and Owen lunged for the letter.

When they read the words, they froze. Their eyes widened in horror.

[With one less mouth to feed, you’ll survive a few more days.]

Ryan stood rooted to the spot, staring at the note. His fingers trembled uncontrollably.

Owen’s whole body shook. His eyes filled with panic,

“D-Dad… did Mom… die because of us?”

Those words hit Ryan like a sledgehammer.

He staggered backward, nearly collapsing.

Clutching the suicide note in a death grip, he frantically pulled out his phone and opened the surveillance footage from half a month earlier.

When he saw me kneeling beside the pipe, licking rusty water, there was no disgust left in his eyes.

Only unbearable remorse. Only heartbreak.

Then, he watched me pick up the knife.

Put it down. Pick it up again.

I cast one last lingering look at the clothes he and Owen had worn, then set the basement’s final bottle of

mineral water beside their pillows.

Lying on the floor, I slowly wrote the suicide note with trembling hands.

When I finished, I raised the knife and sliced across my wrist.

The instant the blade cut into my skin, my face twisted in agony.

I gasped over and over, trembling from the pain.

Yet my lips kept whispering the names of Ryan and Owen, my eyes fixed desperately on the water bottle.

Until I crumpled into a pool of blood, my body convulsing once-and then falling still.

“Ryan… Owen… you have to hold on… rescue will come…”

Those final words became the last straw that crushed Ryan completely.

He dropped to his knees beside my body. A heart-wrenching scream tore from his throat.

“Evelyn-!! No!!”
