He Wrapped Me Up for His Crush. Now I Live in His Head. Chapter 08

Meanwhile, back at Lakeview.

Logan was going crazy.

Since yesterday after school, Avery had disappeared. Calls wouldn’t connect. Texts wouldn’t deliver. He couldn’t see her on Snap.

He waited at the school gate until dark but never saw her. He went to her house.

Her mom said she was staying at Aunt Claire’s for a few days.

“Which aunt?”

He asked urgently.

“The one in Briarwood.”

Her mom looked at him strangely.

“Logan, did you two fight?”

Briarwood?

That far?

And she wasn’t coming to school today?

Logan had a bad feeling.

No way.

Avery wouldn’t really leave. She was just mad at him.

She’d come back in a few days like always. He told himself that.

The next day at school.

Avery’s seat was empty. Her desk was completely cleared out. Even her favorite novels were gone.

He asked Ms. Carter.

“Why isn’t Avery here?”

His voice was anxious.

Ms. Carter gave him a strange look.

“You didn’t know? She transferred.”

She said it casually, like talking about the weather.

Logan’s mind went blank.

Transferred? When?

Why didn’t she tell him? Why?

“Where to?”

His voice shook.

“Briarwood Prep.”

That far? She really left because of that prank?

Impossible.

Avery had followed him since they were little. Even when he bullied her, she never stayed mad.

She’d sulk for a bit and he’d sweet-talk her and everything would be fine.

How could she transfer over something so small? How could she leave without telling him? How could she really not want him anymore?

It had to be fake.

Logan pulled out his phone and kept dialing her number.

It wouldn’t connect. He kept trying until the bell rang.

Still nothing.

Harper asked worriedly.

“Logan, what’s wrong?”

“Avery transferred.”

He said it numbly, like someone had hollowed him out.

“What? Why?”

Harper covered her mouth in surprise, but a flash of satisfaction crossed her eyes.

Why? He wanted to know too.

It was just a joke. They’d done worse before and she never really got mad.

Why this time…

Logan remembered the look Avery gave him yesterday after school.

Calm. Cold. Like looking at a stranger.

There was no love in that look. No hate. Nothing.

Just dead calm. His heart suddenly clenched.

It hurt so much he bent over. Turns out hearts really could hurt. It made breathing difficult.

“Logan, are you okay?”

Harper reached to support him.

Her soft hand on his arm would have made his heart race before.

Now it just annoyed him.

“Don’t touch me.” He shrugged her off.

Harper froze.

Logan had never treated her like that.

“Logan…”

“I said don’t touch me!”

He growled.

His eyes were red like a wounded animal. The whole class looked over.

Harper’s eyes reddened like she was hurt, but Logan didn’t care. All he could think about was Avery.

She really left. She really didn’t want him anymore.
