The next morning, Lorenzo was already in a perfectly tailored black suit.

He gave me that mysterious look. “The orchestra the family sponsors has a special performance tonight. Don’t be late.”

Lucy poked her head out of the master bathroom, mouth full of toothpaste, voice muffled.

“Mia, I’ll pick out your dress later!”

So she knew about it too.

By evening, the Romano family opera house was lit up bright as day.

Outside, along with the orchestra staff, there were plenty of sharp-suited made men handling security.

Lucy greeted every single one of them warmly, like she was the guest of honor.

She led me to front row seats.

Before the show started, she leaned toward me, practically glowing with excitement she couldn’t hide.

“You know why Don scheduled the performance for today, right?”

I nodded calmly.

“I know. It’s our third wedding anniversary.”

She froze for a second, then mumbled.

“Ugh, Don can’t even keep a little secret.”

The lights dimmed. The show began.

The orchestra played Rachmaninoff up on stage.

I couldn’t focus on any of it.

When the last piece ended, the conductor took a bow, then gestured toward the wings.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our special guest for tonight—Mr. Romano.”

Lorenzo straightened his suit and walked out onto the stage.

Standing center in the spotlight, he looked every bit the composed, elegant man he was.

“Thank you all. Tonight holds another special meaning for me—today marks my third wedding anniversary with my wife.”

Applause and cheers rippled through the audience.

Lorenzo continued. “So I’d like to take this opportunity to give my wife a gift.”

He paused, looking right at me.

He took a gilded appointment document from his secretary.

His voice echoed through the theater.

“Starting next month, Ms.Wood will officially serve as Operations Director of the Romano Art Foundation. This was something my wife Mia pushed for very hard. Over the past year, Lucy has handled countless matters for the Romano family foundation behind the scenes.”

“Later this year, Ms. Wood will join the orchestra on their international tour, overseeing the Romano family’s art foundation projects in full.”

Tears streamed down Lucy’s face. She threw her arms around my neck.

“Mia, thank you.”

She let go and walked up onto the stage.

“Thank you to my best friend Mia and Mr. Romano for this opportunity. I won’t let you down.”

The applause grew louder.

“She actually handed her best friend a top foundation role?”

“Hold on—this is Don’s ANNIVERSARY gift for his wife? Why’s Lucy getting all the credit?”

“He claimed it’s what Mia begged for.”

“If this were me, I’d be fuming, not sitting quiet.”

The whispers cut straight through me.

I stood up calmly from my seat.

The spotlight followed my steps as I walked toward the two people on stage.

I stepped up, walked right past Lorenzo.

He smiled and held the microphone out to me.

I looked him dead in the eye and spoke slowly.

“Lorenzo, actually—I have a gift for you and Lucy too.”

Lucy’s smile hadn’t even faded yet.

I pressed the remote.

The giant projection screen behind us lit up slowly.

“Everyone, look at the screen.”
